Super Smash Bros. Ultimate winners Japan Masha

Grand Slum 17 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate superregional held in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture on February 23rd, 2025.

Tournament summary[edit]

Grand Slum 17 was the first event in the Grand Slum series since December 2023, where Grand Slum 16 was initially going to be the last event in the series. In addition to being the largest tournament in the series, it notably reached A tier on the LumiRank 2025, making it the first A tier event in the series. However, this event lacked any prior major winners in its attendance and had low top 50 count: only 3 players ranked in the top 50 on the LumiRank 2024.2 (Lv.1, alice, and Rarikkusu) were in attendance, with none of these players ranking in the top 20. As such, SmashWiki does not consider this event as a major.

Despite low activity throughout 2024 and Grand Slum 17 being his first event in 3 months, the 11th seed Masha took the entire event without dropping a set, defeating Shion, Carmelo, and Toriguri twice along the way, becoming the first Wolf player since the early metagame to win an A-tier event or higher, and becoming one of the few Brawl veterans to win an A-tier event in Ultimate in the post-pandemic metagame. Outside of Masha, several other players in top 8 had notable runs: Toriguri broke his 5th-place "curse" at A-tier events to place 2nd; #12 seed Tsubaki placed top 8 for the first time since UltCore Second the previous year; and #46 seed Te-sHi upset #4 seed alice 3-2 (upset factor 7) and #8 seed DieGorou (upset factor 5) to place 7th, his first top 8 at an A-tier event.

Conversely, several top 8 seeds had notable underperformances at the event. The biggest underperformance was #6 seed Lv.1, who lost to #123 seed Mossan 1-2 (upset factor 9) and #21 seed Furararamen (upset factor 4) to place 17th, becoming the only top 8 seed to place outside of the top 16. In addition, both alice and #8 seed Gachipi were eliminated at 9th, with alice especially falling victim to the aforementioned upset. Finally, though he still made top 8, #2 seed Carmelo was ultimately eliminated in two game 5 scenarios by Masha and Tsubaki (upset factor 5 for both) to place 5th. Outside of top 8, the most notable underperformance was #9 seed Karaage, who lost to #56 seed Yoshiko 1-2 (upset factor 5) and #40 seed Onjoji 1-2 (upset factor 4) to place 49th.

As Jogibu planned on retiring after Grand Slum 17, a Jogibu-centric side event called the "Jogibu Final Lap" was also held.[1]
