A Bucculus (ブチュルス, Bucculus) is a parasitic enemy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Subspace Emissary, and first appears in The Lake level.

Appearance

A Bucculus looks like a plant with large, red lips and a purple poison zone on the back that resembles a strawberry. It hides deep in the ground, with only its lips showing.

In the Subspace Emissary

It appears as red lips on the ground: if the player goes near it, it will pop up and attempt to stick to the character. Moving slowly over it gives it a high chance of sticking to the player, this can be avoided by running, jumping over it, or getting close enough to trigger it and preempt an attack. Once stuck, Bucculus will attack by kissing the player repeatedly to deal damage, filling up its "poison zone".

If a Bucculus misses its grab attack, it will bounce around and plant itself again after a few seconds. If a Bucculus with a filled poison zone is killed, it will most likely drop a Maxim Tomato, but it could occasionally drop Food otherwise. The player does not need to weaken an "empty" Bucculus to turn it into a trophy with a trophy stand, since its base health is always very low (even on Intense).

Although the player is unable to move with a stuck Bucculus on them, they can button mash to make the Bucculus break away. Bucculus will then run and try to plant itself again in the ground. A Bucculus will naturally break away after three hits. It will do a small amount of damage when it is popped off, regardless of if the player mashes or it does so naturally.

The following list shows the damage inflicted by Bucculus for every difficulty:

  • Easy: 10% per hit, 2% release.
  • Normal: 12% per hit, 3% release.
  • Hard: 13% per hit, 3% release.
  • Very Hard: 14% per hit, 4% release.
  • Intense: 16% per hit, 5% release.

Trophy description

Bucculus trophy from Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
The Bucculus trophy in Brawl.

A Subspace Army enemy found firmly planted in the ground, with only its lips showing. These lips, by the way, are covered with spikes that stick in its victim to... (Get this!)...suck out vitality. Basically, this results in serious damage. The torso area has a poison zone where it stores vitality. The Bucculus not only looks offensive-- boy, it's rotten to the core.

Trivia

  • Bucculus' name is likely a corruption of succubus, with its signature attack referencing their portrayal in media as beings which suck the life-force from their victims.
  • When a Bucculus sucks a character's vitality, it makes a slashing sound and animation.
  • On Very Hard and lower, players can heal themselves with a Bucculus by letting it sap their health for a bit and then knocking it out to receive a Maxim Tomato. On Very Hard it will deal 46% and a Maxim Tomato will heal for 50%, allowing for net decrease in damage.
  • Bucculus attacks in a similar way to Leap, an enemy from Kirby & The Amazing Mirror. The differences are that Bucculus inflicts more damage and it resides underground rather than in the air.
  • In Subspace (Part II), the translucent terrain allows the player to see the body of a Bucculus that is still buried. The same happens in The Great Maze.
