Lyn (リン, Rin), whose full name is "Lyndis", is a character from the Fire Emblem series, specifically Fire Emblem. She appears as an Assist Trophy, a Trophy, and a Sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Character description

Lyn is the second female main character in the series and the first one since Fire Emblem Gaiden. Born in the Sacaen Plains, her parents—Lord Hassar, chieftain of the Lorca tribe, and Madelyn, daughter of Lord Hausen of Caelin—were killed by bandits before the beginning of the game. Unlike most Fire Emblem games, Fire Emblem has a tactician character to represent the player. He/She has no lines, and has minimal effect on game (gender modifies certain lines said to the Tactician, and Tactician's birth month adjusts certain character's stats during chapters). Upon meeting him or her, Lyn decides to follow him or her in the interest of training her sword skills.

Lyn is the main lord for the Prologue to Chapter 10 of the game, she is the only lord in Fire Emblem not to appear as an NPC in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. Her eleven chapters serve as a way to teach the player how to play the game and how various mechanics of the game work. Her chapters are also the only time where character death is NOT permanent

Lyn slashes Wario

to the game (except if she dies, the player loses). Her chapters may be skipped on later play-throughs, as all they do is allow the player to increase the stats and levels of characters that appear during her portion of the story.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

As an Assist Trophy

In Brawl, Lyn appears as an Assist Trophy. She charges her sword, then disappears and reappears near an enemy, slashing them. This is her critical attack as a Lord before she is promoted in Fire Emblem. This attack is amazingly powerful and accurate, even against a moving or airborne foe. It can also hit someone edge grabbing. She can KO at damages as low as 32%, and can only be avoided with a well timed airdodge or roll. She usually hits the opponent closest to her.

In this appearance Lyn wields the Mani Katti, not her more powerful quasi-legendary Weapon the Sol Katti. Compare the playable Fire Emblem characters Marth, Roy and Ike, who fight with their legendary weapons (The Falchion, Sword of Seals and Ragnell respectively). However, it should be noted that the Mani Katti is not only the partner blade of Sol Katti, both swords are unique to Lyn.

Trophy Description

A 15-year-old nomadic girl. Lyn is a strong-willed youth whose skill with the blade draws many admirers. Lyn sets out on her quest to become a master swordsman after coming to the aid of a fallen traveler. She soon learns she's a living member of the nobility of Lycia, a neighboring country. Soon she's involved in a violent dispute over the ascension of the Caelin throne.

Sticker

Lyn also makes an appearance as a sticker in Brawl.

Trivia

  • Interestingly, Lyn is the only Assist Trophy in the game whose actual trophy is different from her artwork on the Smash Bros. DOJO!!. Though Dr. Wright does have a skyscraper on his trophy.
  • Lyn's Trophy description in Brawl contradicts the in-game text from Fire Emblem; describing her as being 15 years of age while the game states her age to be 18 . This is most likely attributed to Brawl and Fire Emblem having separate localization staffs. Lyn's age is 15 in the original Japanese release. When Fire Emblem was localized for Western audiences audience, her age was changed to 18. The Brawl localization team apparently failed to note the change and wrote the description referring to the Japanese age. Compare with Black Knight. (This is corrected in the PAL version.)
  • If Lyn lands in the spot she was summoned, but lands again in a different spot, (like from a breakable block from the Mushroomy Kingdom)she will automatically strike her closest target.
  • When summoned, Lyn says "Prepare yourself," or "I'll handle this.", and when attacking, she says "Taste my Blade!" or shouts a battle cry, making her, Gray Fox, and Shadow the Hedgehog the only Assist Trophies to speak in full sentences.
