Captain Olimar is a small astronaut from the planet pikipedia. Olimar, like the rest of his kind, is only the height of a quarter (1.9 cm, 0.75") (his proportions are strongly inflated in the Smash games). Olimar orders and commands the Pikmin through his games.
Captain Olimar hails from the planet pikipedia. As a Hocotatian, Olimar's appearance is largely humanoid, yet displays a number of distinct traits: he is extremely minuscule in size (being ≈1.9 cm/≈0.75 in tall), a large head-to-body ratio, a bulbous nose, pointy ears, small tufts of hair and hyphen-shaped eyes that, during moments of surprise, comically bulge out and appear similar to human eyes. In regard to Olimar's personality, it is revealed via his journal that he is caring and dedicated to his family, while also having a taste for the arts and that he "always had a way with animals", the latter of which is evident with his pikipedia. Olimar's name is a reference to Nintendo's mascot Mario: his Japanese name, "Orimā", is "Mario" written backward in Japanese when written in kana.

Captain Olimar's first appearance was in the Nintendo GameCube game, Pikmin, where he is the main and only playable character. His first adventure tells that his ship, the Dolphin, crash lands on a Distant Planet, where he is aided by the Pikmin, an indigenous plant-like alien race to find and repair his ship; as oxygen, which is plentiful in the atmosphere, is lethal to him, he has only thirty days to completely fix his ship. There are three possible endings to this game; in the canon ending, Olimar returns home with his ship fully repaired, segueing directly into the beginning of the next game.

Dolphin}}, crash landing on an uncharted planet after it is struck by an asteroid. Upon landing and discovering that the S.S. Dolphin has been severely damaged and that his life support system will expire in thirty days, which is further compounded by the planet's atmosphere being rich in oxygen (which is poisonous to Hocotatians), Olimar sets out to repair his ship. He also stumbles upon a sentient, indigenous plant/animal hybrid species, which he dubs Pikmin to help him find his ship's parts. There are three possible endings to Pikmin; in the canon ending, Olimar returns home with the S.S. Dolphin fully repaired, segueing directly into the beginning of pikipedia.

More on Olimar's character is elaborated in pikipedia; in the game, Olimar is identified as the top employee of pikipedia. Additionally, he has a wife and children, and communicates with them whenever he can through the course of Pikmin 2.

Olimar is joined by pikipedia in the second game. During the events of Pikmin, Hocotate Freight was forced into bankruptcy due to a falsified report by an astronaut named pikipedia. In the beginning of Pikmin 2, Olimar returned from the Distant Planet only to find that the company was 10,100 pokos (the universe's currency) in debt; upon his return, the company was forced to sell the Dolphin after he had spent days repairing it. The shock of the revelation of the company's fate causes Olimar to drop a bottle cap that he brought home for his son. However, an old, used Hocotate Freight Ship, analyses it, and discovers that the piece is worth 100 pokos; when the President learns about how there's more objects on the Distant Planet, he makes Olimar and Louie return there in the Hocotate Freight Ship to gather treasure to pay off the debt. After obtaining 10,000 pokos of treasure, Olimar accidentally leaves the Distant Planet without Louie, forcing Olimar to team up with the President to save him.

Olimar is based on Mario, as he has a similar nose, and his name, prior to translation from Japanese to English "Orimā", is "Mario" backwards in Japanese when written in kana. Likewise, the lankier Louie, whose Japanese name is "Rūi" is derived from Luigi (Ruīji) in both name and body proportion.

Olimar returns as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4. He was given a whistle on the bottom of his helmet (similarly to what the 3 main characters have in Pikmin 3), and his spacesuit is now brighter. The two top buttons on Olimar's suit are now blue instead of red. There is a Hocotate Freight patch on both of his arms now. Olimar was the first veteran to be confirmed after those revealed at E3 2013. Four of his palette swaps switch him into the protagonist of Pikmin 3, Alph.

Olimar is currently placed 30th out of 58 on the tier list, at the top of the E tier. The reduction of Pikmin he can have by his side from six to three resulted in him being nerfed, weakening his overall damage output. However, he received various buffs in other areas, with the most beneficial being his recovery, as it is no longer a tether recovery that is easily edgehogged, but is now Winged Pikmin, which is capable of much greater recovery distance. Other buffs include a more powerful forward tilt, typically stronger smash attacks, and faster forward and back aerials. Regardless of his main nerf, Olimar still has good damage racking abilities with his Pikmin, and is still seen as a relatively viable choice for competitive play, and has gained some decent representation.
Olimar is currently ranked 30th on the tier list, placing him at the top of the E tier. The number of Pikmin he can have by his side was halved from six to three is his most glaring nerf, as it weakens his overall damage output and camping potential. However, he received various buffs in other areas, with the most beneficial being Winged Pikmin replacing Pikmin Chain as his recovery move. In comparison to Pikmin Chain, Winged Pikmin is is capable of much greater recovery distance. Character description

Captain Olimar hails from the planet Hocotate. In regard to Olimar's personality, it is revealed via his journal that he is caring and dedicated to his family, while also having a taste for the arts and that he "always had a way with animals", the latter of which is evident with his Piklopedia. Olimar's name is a reference to Nintendo's mascot Mario: his Japanese name, "Orimā", is "Mario" written backward in Japanese when written in kana.

Captain Olimar debuted in the Nintendo GameCube game, Pikmin, where he is the playable character. His first adventure details how his vacation is derailed due to his ship, the S.S. There are three possible endings to Pikmin; in the canon ending, Olimar returns home with the S.S. Dolphin fully repaired, segueing directly into the beginning of Pikmin 2.

Olimar's character is further elaborated in Pikmin 2; in the game, Olimar is identified as the top employee of Hocotate Freight. Additionally, he has a wife and children, and communicates with them whenever he can throughout the course of Pikmin 2.

In the beginning of Pikmin 2, it is revealed that Hocotate Freight wound up being 10,100 pokos in debt during the events of Pikmin, due to a falsified report by a fellow employee named Louie. Upon Olimar's return, the company was forced to sell the S.S. Dolphin after he had spent days repairing it. The shock of the revelation of the company's fate causes Olimar to drop a bottle cap that he brought home for his son. In Pikmin 3, Olimar is no longer the main protagonist, although he still plays an important role in the game's story. Having returned to the Pikmin Planet in search of more treasure in order to buy back the S.S. Dolphin and pay off Hocotate Freight's second instance of debt, Olimar salvages the Cosmic Drive Key dropped by the S.S. Drake, forcing Alph, Brittany and Charlie to seek him out so they can reclaim it and repair their ship. In the end, they find that he has been captured by the Plasm Wraith, which they defeat to save him.

Captain Olimar makes only one minor appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

As a trophy

Olimar's trophy is uniquely obtained by booting Melee while having a save file of Pikmin on the same memory card: the trophy is unlocked as soon as the game is started.

The main character of the game Pikmin, Captain Olimar crash-lands on a mysterious planet after his spaceship malfunctions. In order to get off the planet, he must gather the pieces of his broken ship, but the atmosphere of the planet is poisonous to Olimar. As a result, he has to enlist the help of the native Pikmin.
