Austria
Austria is a European Smash region that encompasses the country of the same name. It shares a border with Germany and Switzerland to the west; as such, the scenes in all three countries regular cross over with each other. In addition, Austria shares a border with Italy to the south, Hungary to the east, and several Southeast Europe countries. The country itself is composed of 9 states: Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, Upper Austria, Vienna, and Vorarlberg. Tournament activity primarily takes place in Vienna, which also serves as the capital of the country, though competitive scenes exist throughout the country.
Initially a small region, its size grew throughout the 2010s. One of Austria's earliest notable players was Luigi player, who placed 9th at Europe's only Brawl major and placed well at several other German events. Austria grew the most in the latter half of the decade with good performances from players such as Klemenz, the only Austrian player ranked in Europe in Smash 4; Timi, who eventually became the first Austrian player to rank in the top 20 in Europe; and several other Melee players who ranked in the lower half of the top 50. However, the scene grew the most at the end of the decade and into the 2020s, thanks to the rise of Vienna Challengers Arena, or VCA, as a premier European event during this time. Many Austrians also received recognition due to their results in Ultimate, notably Yetey, Austria's best player in the early metagame, and Sintro, who later became the first Austrian player ranked globally. VCA's controversies and discontinuation eventually left the region without a notable superregional-level event; however, some Austrian players remained relatively successful in Europe, with these players continuing to rank in Europe's top 50 for both Melee and Ultimate.
Outside of competitive play, Austria is the home of Beefy Smash Doods, a well-known YouTube channel and former esports team that had sponsored several notable players in Smash 4.
