Upstate New York, sometimes referred to as simply New York, is a Smash region that encompasses the region of New York outside the New York City metropolitan area. It borders the New York and Pennsylvania portions of the Tristate Area; the Pennsylvania portion of the Midwest; the New England states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont; and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Due to their location, upstate New York often crosses over with the Ontario and New York City scenes, though they also have active scenes in their own metropolitan areas.

Though often overshadowed by the New York City scene, upstate New York has fostered a noteworthy scene in competitive Smash. One of the first notable players from this region was San, who became the best Ike player in Brawl and was instrumental in the character's rise on the Brawl tier lists. The region remained rather obscure until late into Smash 4's lifespan, when both Dark Wizzy and SDX made a name for themselves in the Smash 4 competitive scene. This continued into the start of the Ultimate scene, with Dark Wizzy remaining the region's primary representation in competitive play, while the post-COVID-19 pandemic landscape saw the meteoric rise of Jmook, who became one of the best Melee players during this time.
