Gaur Plain (ガウル平原, Gaur Plain) is a stage in both versions of Super Smash Bros. 4 based on an area from Xenoblade Chronicles.

Overview

There are two main rock platforms high up on each side of the stage with walk-off edges, and a giant chasm between them. A collection of smaller platforms appear below the main platforms. The center of the stage is mostly empty, with a short gap between the top platforms and a wider gap between the lower platforms. The background also shifts through a day/night cycle.

The Wii U version of the stage features a slightly different arrangement of the platform on the left and some more platforms, including two near the bottom which feature springs which can bounce characters up to the top platforms. Metal Face also appears at night, attacking the players with claws and laser beams. His laser attack can target any of the two upper platforms, making them fall and destroying the platforms underneath. The original layout is automatically restored some time after his defeat. If attacked enough Metal Face can be defeated, causing him to explode: the explosion harms all characters in its range except for the one who landed the finishing hit. However, when the night falls again he might still return.

Origin

Gaur Plain originates from Xenoblade Chronicles. It is a location within the greater Bionis' Leg area. Shulk and his friend Reyn traverse this area to get to the Bionis' Head. The gigantic figure seen in the distance is the Mechonis, another location in the game; however, the Mechonis is more distant in the background than it was in Xenoblade Chronicles.

Trivia

  • Gaur Plain and Wily Castle, the two non-Smash based stages which are common to both versions of Super Smash Bros. 4, appeared on home consoles and handhelds (Wii and New Nintendo 3DS for Xenoblade Chronicles, NES and GameBoy for Mega Man 2), although the handheld version of Xenoblade Chronicles came out after Smash.
    • However, it was announced prior to Smash 3DS's release.
