Introduction tagline

King Dedede is a playable character in the Super Smash Bros. mod Smash Remix. He was added into the mod in its v1.3.0 release on February 1, 2023.

Masahiro Sakurai reprises his role as King Dedede through archived audio from Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Attributes[edit]

Unlike the other heavyweight characters in Smash Remix, King Dedede excels at mid-range combat with the use of his large hammer and minions, and he is also great at managing stage control with the use of his Waddle Dees, Waddle Doos, and Gordos. He has 4 jumps, being the only character with that amount, and he has one of the lowest air speeds in the entire game. Despite this, his recovery is among the best with his multiple jumps and an armored up special that is one of the highest reaching in the game. Recovering is one of his strong suits, and that makes edgeguarding him rather risky. On the other hand, these factors also make him great at edgeguarding, using his various minions, disjoints with his hammer, and great overall airtime. King Dedede can make recovering very challenging for his opponents and still recover himself.

Up special Super Dedede Jump 10% (jump), 12% (drop), 16% (landing), 3% (star) Dedede does a big leap upward and then rockets back down to the ground with a devastating stomp that produces stars on both sides of himself. The move can be cancelled partway by pressing down.
Down special Waddle Dee Toss 3% (Waddle Dee, Waddle Doo, Beam), 18% (Gordo) While holding the button, Dedede will "charge" the attack by cycling through Waddle Dee, then Waddle Doo, then Gordo, throwing them when the button is released. Charging all the way to Gordo will allow Dedede to store the charge and throw Gordo by performing the move once more. Waddle Dee will wander around the stage, hopping at nearby enemies, before eventually disappearing. Waddle Doo will behave similarly, but instead of hopping, it will perform its signature Beam attack that hits multiple times. Gordo will continue to bounce until running out of momentum or getting stuck in an obstacle, dealing significant damage to opponents on contact.

On-screen appearance[edit]

  • Crash-lands a Warp Star into the ground. Unlike Kirby, he faceplants upon landing.

  • Holds food in both of his hands and alternates eating between both hands. References what he does when Kirby reaches the end of a level in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.
  • Smirks at the camera and slaps his belly a few times (making it jiggle) while leaning against his hammer.
  • Twirls his hammer in various directions and then poses. (CSS animation)

In Remix Modes[edit]

Remix 1P Mode[edit]

King Dedede can appear as an ordinary opponent, giant opponent, or as a multi-man team, where he is fought on Mt. Dedede. He can also appear in Stage 4 as a team with Kirby called "Dream Team", where they are fought on Dream Greens or Mt. Dedede.

All-Star Mode[edit]

In All-Star Mode, King Dedede and his allies can appear on Dream Greens or Mt. Dedede.

Profile[edit]

"The Great King Dedede" is the self proclaimed king of Dream Land and Kirby's frenemy. Although he is known for his more mischievous origins, he has put his and Kirby's differences aside for the greater good of Planet Popstar several times.

Despite appearing to turn over a new leaf, he's still always willing to prove himself superior against his pink puff-ball rival.

Trivia[edit]

  • King Dedede's portrait on the character selection screen and pose in the intro of the "Dream Team" fight in Remix 1P Mode are based on a piece of artwork from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, the former of which was edited to remove Kirby.
  • The Smash Remix team initially considered using King Dedede's design from Kirby Super Star. This was changed to his Kirby 64 design due to the team wanting to portray the Nintendo 64 era more. This decision was contentious between the team.[1]
  • The update King Dedede and Marina released in (v1.3.0) is the only version of Smash Remix to release Remix characters with multiple jumps.
  • During King Dedede's clapping animation, he starts clapping normally, but seconds later, he gets frustrated and turns his head away, disappointed. This is a reference to the cutscene that plays in Kirby 64 after defeating him and his reluctance to join the team.
  • King Dedede's reveal trailer features Ness, Luigi, and Kirby. This is a reference to his role in Subspace Emissary from Brawl, as these three are the ones that King Dedede saved (Kirby, inadvertently, since he swallowed one, thinking it was candy) by placing Dedede Brooches on their trophies before Tabuu's takeover by use of Off Waves.
  • King Dedede's intro tagline "King Dedede Takes a Swing!!!" is a reference to his infamous weapon of choice: his massive, iconic hammer.
  • King Dedede's polygon variant resembles Masked Dedede, and its hammer is turned into a giant axe.
