Ebisumaru? Steals the Show!!!
Introduction tagline

Ebisumaru is a playable character in the Super Smash Bros. mod Smash Remix. He was added to the mod in its 1.5.0 release on January 4, 2024. Ebisumaru is the fifth playable character added to the mod not to be playable in an official Smash game. He previously shared a slot with Goemon, but was later moved to the bonus characters section in the v2.0.0 update.

Kenichi Ogata reprises his role as Ebisumaru through archived audio from Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon and Goemon's Great Adventure.

Attributes[edit]

Ebisumaru mostly uses the same moves as Goemon with identical damage numbers and some minor aesthetic differences, though a small selection of attacks, such as his specials, are different. While his lack of ranged attacks compared to Goemon does impede him somewhat, he more than makes up for it with his ability to trap opponents in long jab strings, his improved recovery over Goemon, and most significantly, his ability to manifest healing items in the middle of battle. This property, in particular, means that he is strongly discouraged from use in competitive play.

Moveset[edit]

Name Damage Description
Neutral attack 2% Smacks the opponent with a paper fan. It behaves like a slower version of the fan item.
Forward tilt 15% Swings a small mallet.
Up tilt 12% Extends his leg and kicks upwards
Down tilt 10% Swings his mallet down while lying prone.
Dash attack 12% Does a running pirouette.
Forward Smash 18% Swings his mallet hard, which grows as it hits the ground.
Up smash 2% (hits 1-4), 10% (hit 5), 18% (altogether) Ebisumaru twirls his wood flute above his head. Hits any enemy caught in it up to five times.
Down smash 16% Ebisumaru sweeps with his hammer in front of him, and then behind him.
Neutral aerial 14% (clean), 11% (late) Spins like a pinwheel in midair.
Forward aerial 12% Does a 180° overhead swing with his fan.
Back aerial 16% (clean), 11% (late) Thrusts his butt out behind him.
Up aerial 15% (clean), 10% (from above) Ebisumaru pushes his arms up while holding his paddle.
Down aerial 14% Swings his mallet downwards.
Grab - Ebisumaru reaches forward with both hands.
Forward throw 16% Ebisumaru pulls the opponent in before tossing them forward.
Back throw 18% Ebisumaru swings the opponent over his shoulder.
Floor attack (front) 6% Sweeps his mallet along the ground, doing damage in front and behind him.
Floor attack (back) 6% Sweeps his mallet along the ground, doing damage in front and behind him.
Edge attack (fast) 6% Ebisumaru pulls himself up and swings his mallet overhead.
Edge attack (slow) 6% Ebisumaru slowly pulls himself up and sweeps his hammer along the ground.
Neutral special Meat Saw-Hammer 18% Ebisumaru pulls out a hammer and swings it when the button is released. While the button is held, Ebisumaru will keep the hammer readied and can move around, but is unable to jump, turn around, or perform other attacks until the button is released. When the hammer makes contact with any hitbox, it will spawn a Dango item, which can be picked up like food to heal 10% instantly. He also has a 1% chance to spawn a Maxim Tomato with his neutral special.
Up special Paddle Fly 2% (each hit) Ebisumaru begins flying into the air by flapping a pair of wooden paddles like wings, based on his recovery animation from Goemon's Great Adventure, which will damage enemies on contact. He performs 10 flaps before the move ends, but he does not enter helpless state after doing so and can continue to perform other attacks while falling.
Down special Hip Attack 14% Ebisumaru does a ground pound, bouncing up nearly as high as his double jump. He will not take damage when bouncing off most hazardous terrain, such as spikes or lava, but similar to a recovery move, he cannot perform multiple hip attacks in succession.

On-screen appearance[edit]

  • Ebisumaru descends from the skies in a green beam of light, landing face down on the ground before recovering.

Taunt[edit]

  • Pulls out a camera and takes a selfie. The flash of the camera hits behind him and does 1% damage to opponents in range. If an opponent is facing the flash, they will also be temporarily stunned.

Trivia[edit]

  • Ebisumaru's character selection screen portrait, which can only be seen in the 12 Character Battle mode, is based on his render from the Goemon's Great Adventure box art, edited to remove his paddle.
  • Ebisumaru was planned to be released alongside Goemon, but due to time constraints, he was pushed to 1.5.0. This is evident in Goemon's reveal, where the video concludes with the last section of the map remaining unseen.
  • Ebisumaru was originally selected as a D-Pad variant of Goemon before being moved to the bonus character slot in v2.0.0.
  • Ebisumaru's intro tagline "Ebisumaru? Steals The Show!!!" is a reference to Goemon's preceding reveal trailer in 1.4.0, where the characters cheered for Ebisumaru but booed Goemon, despite both characters putting on similar performances. Also pokes a bit of fun at Ebisumaru's nature of being an unexpected joke character.
