Falco (SR)

Falco is a playable character in the Super Smash Bros. mod Smash Remix. He was added into the mod in its v0.8.1 release on July 19, 2019. Initially, Falco completely replaced Fox due to it not being possible at the time to add new character slots into Smash 64. With the release of v0.9 on October 28th of that year, however, it became possible for players to use both Falco and Fox in the mod. Prior to v2.0.0, Slippy functioned as Falco's boss character, but has since been moved to the bonus characters section.

Hisao Egawa reprises his role as Falco through archived audio from Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Attributes[edit]

Falco is mostly reminiscent of his Melee incarnation, as he still shares most moves with Fox, but he also has some of his moves from later Smash incarnations. His main difference from Fox is the fact that he does not have a projectile; instead, having the Falco Phantasm, his recovery has less startup time, but travels less, and his reflector launches upwards as in Melee.

Techniques[edit]

Land-cancelled shine[edit]

Land-cancelled shine

This move can be land-canceled, meaning using shine in the air and landing on a surface (without holding special) will cancel the move. Due to this, using shine immediately after jumping, a technique known as a pseudo-jump-cancel, activates a frame 1 hitbox with little-to-no end lag. This technique can be very useful for extending combos and performing mindgames, and it can also immediately be followed up with many moves, such as aerials or another shine to rack up additional damage and continue a ladder combo (this can also throw unwary opponents offguard). And it can also be used repeatedly on an opponent's shield to be a true shield breaking combo if done correctly.

Short phantasm[edit]

Short phantasm

When using Falco's phantasm, if the special button is pressed again anywhere throughout the move, the distance he travels will be shortened or even cancelled entirely. This gives Falco more options and mix-up opportunities as well, especially useful for recovering. On top of all of this, mastering shortening can enable you to do more advanced things such as ledge-canceling platforms from different distances.

In Remix Modes[edit]

Remix 1P Mode[edit]

Falco can appear as an ordinary opponent, giant opponent, or as a multi-man team, where he is fought on Corneria (or Corneria City prior to its removal in v2.0.0). He can also appear in Stage 4 as a team with Fox called "Star Fox", where they are fought on Sector Z DL, Corneria, Venom, or Discovery Falls.

All-Star Mode[edit]

In All-Star Mode, Falco and his allies can appear on Corneria or Discovery Falls (or Corneria City prior to its removal in v2.0.0).

Profile[edit]

In his early years, Falco formed and led a galactic gang. Eventually falling out with his crew, he ended up joining the elite Star Fox team where he befriended Fox McCloud.

As an ace pilot, his brash personality and unrivaled confidence have helped turn the tide of battles as well as ruffle the feathers of some crewmates.

Works:

  • Star Fox (SNES)
  • Star Fox 64 (N64)

Trivia[edit]

  • Falco's character select screen portrait is based off his model in Star Fox 64.
  • Falco's reveal trailer references "Super Smash Bird", an earlier Falco character mod that served as the basis for his Remix incarnation.
  • Falco originally shared a victory theme with Fox before it was changed to the theme of Titania from Star Fox 64 in v0.9.0, then again to the map screen theme from the original Star Fox in v0.9.1.
  • During Falco's clapping animation, instead of clapping, he disappointingly crosses his arms and impatiently taps his foot. This is a reference to what he does on the title screen of Star Fox 64.
  • The design for Falco's polygon variant was originally meant for Sonic, made to resemble Metal Sonic, but the Remix Team made another design for Polygon Sonic. They retained the Metal Sonic-based design but made some adjustments, adding bird-like embellishments to further resemble Falco.
