Dark Samus is a playable character in the Super Smash Bros. mod Smash Remix. She was added into the mod in its v0.9.1 release on December 24, 2019. Prior to v2.0.0, Dark Samus had her own slot on the character selection screen, but has since been moved to the bonus characters section.

Attributes

Like in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Dark Samus functions as a clone of Samus. However, Dark Samus was given new moves to make her more unique from Samus. Her neutral aerial has her emit body sparks similarly to Mewtwo's, her up smash lacks elemental properties, and her down smash has her slam the ground to create a shockwave around her. Her down special was also revamped into Boost Ball, where she curls up and rolls a distance forward. When used mid-air, she'll diagonally boost forward and crash to the ground. Now, she can charge her Charged Shot in the air.

On-screen appearance

• Exits a Super Metroid-style save point. Shared with Samus.

Taunt

• Spins around while emitting small flashes of Phazon. Her side taunt from Ultimate.

Idle poses

• Floats slightly above the ground like she does in Ultimate. Prior to v1.5.0., she shared the same idle stance as Samus.

In Remix Modes

Remix 1P Mode

Prior to her reclassification as a bonus character in 2.0.0, Dark Samus could appear as an ordinary opponent, giant opponent, or as a multi-man team, where she was fought on Norfair. However, she can still appear in Stage 4 as a team with Samus called "Echoes", where they are fought on Norfair or Crateria.

All-Star Mode

Prior to version 2.0.0, Dark Samus and her allies could appear on Norfair. Following her reclassification as a bonus character, Dark Samus no longer appears an opponent in All-Star Mode.

Profile (pre-v2.0.0)

The merciless Dark Samus was born from the fusion of dark phazon and Samus' phazon suit.

This being has no remorse as it corrupts and destroys its way around the universe, hunting down more precious Phazon.

Trivia

• Even though Dark Samus was relegated to a bonus character, she still has a Fighting Polygon based on her that can appear when fighting the Fighting Polygon Team in Remix 1P Mode.
• During development of later Smash Remix versions, the team experimented with making Missile Dark Samus's neutral special and giving her a unique up special that would make her rise upwards before crashing down. Ultimately, the team decided against both, as they felt the required effort wouldn't be worth updating a clone character created so long ago.
• As of Version 2.0.0, Dark Samus' CSS portrait seems to be based on her artwork in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. Before this, her CSS portrait was based on her Super Smash Bros. Ultimate render.
  • OniFox, who created the new CSS portrait, explained on the Smash Remix Discord server that it's just an edited render of the low-poly model, and not based on official renders.
• The head of Dark Samus's skeleton is based on her supercharged form from Metroid Prime 2.
• Dark Samus' polygon variant is identical to Samus', albeit with differing animations.
  • She is also the only Remix clone character to have the same polygon variant model as their parent character.
  • She is also the second Remix clone character to share an identical polygon, the other being Dr. Mario (before v2.0.0.).
• Dark Samus is one of the only two Remix characters to have had two different congratulations screens, the other one being Young Link.
• According to OniFox, a Smash Remix developer and creator of Dark Samus' new textures, she once had a Phazon Suit-inspired alternate costume made for the new model, but this was scrapped as the team wanted to limit the amount of costume variants.
• The new white alternate costume has jokingly been referred to as the iMac G3 costume by the developers.
  • Lead Artist Sopebockz was first to make the joke during a voice call, when OniFox was making the new palette and asked what they thought of it. This was shared publicly on the Smash Remix Discord server after the release of 2.0.0.
