Introduction tagline

The Mad Piano is a playable character in the Super Smash Bros. mod Smash Remix. Initially revealed on April Fools' Day of 2020 in a fake trailer for v1.0.0, it was officially added into the mod in its v0.9.5 release on December 6, 2020. The Mad Piano is based on the enemy of the same name from Super Mario 64. The Mad Piano was the first playable character added to Smash Remix who was not playable in an official Smash game. It initially shared a slot with Luigi before v1.5.0 as his boss variant, where it would then share a slot with Kirby, before v2.0.0 made most bonus characters share a slot on the character select screen.

The Mad Piano is primarily "voiced" by either music being played on piano or the sound of piano keys being smashed, but it does repurpose two voice clips taken from Super Mario 64; its neutral special reuses the voice clip of Mario coughing, voiced by Charles Martinet, while its "hurt" sound reuses a Koopa Troopa scream, derived from the stock sound "HUMAN, YELL - YELL: FEMALE" from Voice Spectral Vol. 1 - Track 02.

Attributes[edit]

Mad Piano is a very heavyweight fighter with lots of single-hit attacks that revolve around physical body attacks or bites. Its down special is particularly useful, as it acts as a grapple, a projectile defense, a healing tool, and a way to augment its own projectiles. On top of all this, unlike other characters, Mad Piano is also able to do damage simply by dashing or landing during fast fall and helpless, making fights against it purposefully unbalanced. As a result, most tournaments opt to ban Mad Piano from play.

Moveset[edit]

Name Damage Description
Neutral attack 10% Stretches horizontally.
Forward tilt 14% A bite.
Up tilt 14% Stretches vertically.
Down tilt 12% Stretches horizontally and slides forward.
Dashing 8% As the Mad Piano runs forward, its mouth goes up and down, which counts as attacking anything in front of it.
Dash attack 12% The Mad Piano lunges forward and bites down.
Forward Smash 18% The Mad Piano lunges forward and bites down.
Up smash 16% Flips its lid upwards.
Down smash 8% (hits 1-5), 40% (altogether) Squishes itself flat and twirls around on the ground before reverting to its normal size. Can hit opponents up to five times.
Landing 10% When the Mad Piano lands during fast fall or helpless, anyone around it gets hurt.
Neutral aerial 16% Twirls itself around.
Forward aerial 14% Bites down.
Back aerial 14% Flips its lid backwards.
Up aerial 12% Flips its lid upwards.
Down aerial 12% Stretches vertically and falls faster.
Grab - Flips its lid up, tilts forwards, and sticks its tongue out. Anyone who gets caught by its tongue gets eaten by the Mad Piano.
Forward throw 12% Spits the enemy out in front of itself.
Back throw 16% Squishes and spins backwards before spitting the enemy out.
Floor attack (front) 6% Squishes and spins rapidly a few times.
Floor attack (back) 6% Squishes and spins rapidly upside-down a few times before flipping to be upright again.
Edge attack (fast) 6% Uses its lid to fling itself back onstage, sliding forward a little bit on its top before backing up and flipping to be upright again.
Edge attack (slow) 6% Slowly climbs the ledge and then stands on its side to then fall forwards, slamming its top to the ground.
Neutral special Book 4% Spits out a Bookend. The Bookend travels in an arc. The angle can be manipulated by holding down B. If B is tapped, the arc is wider, but if B is held, then the arc is tighter.

Mad Piano can also increase the number of bookends by eating projectiles with his down special.

Up special Super Jump Chomp 8% (during the rise), 11% (chomp) The Mad Piano jumps up before slamming its lid closed.
Down special Eat 8% The Mad Piano leans forward with its mouth open. If an enemy gets within its range, it'll swallow them and twirl around before spitting them back out.

If a projectile is eaten instead, the number of bookends is increased and recovers 2% damage per projectile eaten.

On-screen appearance[edit]

  • Suddenly appears, playing the sound effect that plays when taking an invisible warp.

Taunt[edit]

Idle poses[edit]

  • The Mad Piano has no idle animation, simply standing motionless until it moves.

Victory poses[edit]

All of Mad Piano's victory poses involve it playing piano covers of music from the Mario series. Except for the first victory pose, the covers loop endlessly until the player exits back to the character select screen.

  • Squashes and stretches while playing Player Down from Super Mario World, leaning towards the screen and opening its lid when finished. Uniquely, the results screen music does not play after it finishes playing the song.
  • Hops on each leg while playing Invincibility BGM.
  • Squashes and stretches slowly while playing Piranha Plant's Lullaby from Super Mario 64.

In Remix Modes[edit]

Remix 1P Mode[edit]

  • The Mad Piano can be fought during the 9th stage of Remix 1P Mode, where it can be fought on Big Boo's Haunt.

All-Star Mode[edit]

  • As a bonus character, the Mad Piano never appears as an opponent in All-Star Mode.

(Note: Mad Piano's alts have no direct references as stated by the developers, but some unintended resemblances will be listed.)

  • Default: Based on its appearance in Super Mario 64.
  • Red: Resembles the iconic red piano owned by Schroeder from the Peanuts series. Red is also a common color for electric pianos.
  • Yellow: Resembles the color of brass, a common material used for the pipes of an organ.
  • Blue: Blue is a color commonly used for toy pianos. It could also be a play on the fact that pianos are usually utilized for sad or "blue" songs.
  • Green: Resembles the color of Warp pipes, a recurring object in the Super Mario series. Green is also a color commonly used for toy pianos.
  • White: Resembles the color of Boos, being that Mad Piano appears in Big Boo's Haunt. White also resembles the iconic white piano played by John Lennon in his song "Imagine". White is also a color commonly used for house decor pianos.

Trivia[edit]

  • The Mad Piano's congratulations screen is a parody of a scene from The Super Mario Bros. Movie where Bowser sings Peaches while being surrounded by visions of Peach. Mario is used in place of Peach, specifically mimicking the poses of the bottom-left, center, and right visions, with the right vision leaning on the platform Bowser is playing piano on.
  • Mad Piano's CSS portrait, exclusively seen in 12 Character Battle, is based on their model in Super Mario 64, it is not based on any render or artwork.
  • Mad Piano is the only character to have ever moved to a different character's boss variant. Originally for Luigi, it was moved to Kirby after the inclusion of Metal Luigi. As of 2.0.0, it is now in the bonus character slot.
    • It is also the only Remix bonus/boss character to have moved twice.
  • Mad Piano is the heaviest character in Smash Remix, beating out characters like Donkey Kong, Metal Mario, and even Giga Bowser.
  • Mad Piano is the only character in the game that grunts while taking weak hits, those being out-of-tune piano noises.
  • Mad Piano's intro tagline "Mad Piano Actually Tunes In!!?" references the act of tuning a piano. It also references the April Fools' Day joke of Mad Piano's Remix inclusion coming to fruition.
  • Mad Piano is the only Remix character whose CSS animation does not translate to any of its victory animations.
