Proto Man appears in Super Smash Bros. 4 in several roles.

As a trophy

Proto Man's trophy is exclusive to the Wii U version.

A prototype robot developed by Dr. Light. After his completion, a critical problem was found in his energy core. He fled Dr. Light's care to die alone, but was then recovered by Dr. Wily and converted into a fighting machine. Since then, he's been both friend and foe to Mega Man and always something of a lone wolf.

SNES: Mega Man 7 (09/1995)

In Smash Tour

In Smash Tour, Proto Man is a green item. A player using Proto Man will cause any items that target them to be reflected back to the attacking item's user.

As a costume

Proto Man is the basis for a paid downloadable content costume for Mii Gunners. Nintendo also released a QR code for those who wish to have the exact Mii used in the costume's advertising.

Origin

Proto Man is a prototype robot built by Dr. Light, and thus serves as an "older brother" to Mega Man and Roll. While aloof and occasionally in conflict with Mega Man, Proto Man is usually a heroic figure in the Mega Man series. Dr. Wily attempts to frame Proto Man as the villain in Mega Man 5, but the impostor Dark Man is ultimately revealed by the real Proto Man. Proto Man is also playable in several games, such as Mega Man Powered Up, Mega Man 9, and Mega Man 10.
