Green Hill Zone is the stage that represents Sonic the Hedgehog in the game. It is unlocked after Sonic himself is unlocked. The midsection is a half-pipe that crumbles away if it attacked too much during the course of the fight. There are also checkpoint lampposts that can be spun around to hurt other players once when they are blue. In the background is a giant shuttle loop, an icon of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Supporting Sonic characters Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Silver the Hedgehog can be seen making their cameo appearances as they run (or in Tails' case, fly) to get through the loop. The background also consists of various other parts of the Green Hill Zone.

The first stage in the first Sonic game, Green Hill Zone is as iconic to Sonic as World 1-1 is to Mario. Some variation of it appears in nearly every 2-D Sonic game. A full 3-D version of it appears as a secret unlockable in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle with a design not too different from that seen in Brawl.

The stage itself is generally a curve with breakable parts. These parts make the stage a hazard itself, but soon returns. To the far sides, there are flat parts, however.
