Beehive (ハチの巣, Beehive) is an item in Super Smash Bros. 4.

Operation

The beehive can be picked up and thrown at opponents. Once it hits an opponent it activates, spawning bees that repeatedly damage the target dealing 2-4% damage with each hit. If the beehive does not hit any opponent, however, the bees attack a random opponent if there are 2 or more on the field (excluding the thrower and same-colored teammates if Team Attack is turned off). The bees will remain on-stage for 10 seconds chasing their target, and cannot be reflected, shielded against or destroyed, with the exception of Item-swallowing (only if they are eaten before their first attack). The bees can be avoided as long as the player continues to roll, sidestep or airdodge. If there is no enemy present, the bees will immediately disappear.

Beehives may very rarely destroy themselves.

Trophy information

The Beehive trophy appears in both versions. In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U it is part of the Animal Crossing: New Leaf Trophy Box.

Beehive

An example of fine architecture constructed by insects, these bees are not shy about defending their hard work. Throw this at an enemy to direct their hate at that player. If the bees are after you, you can shake them for a while with some evasive maneuvers, but they'll track you down.

Bees don't like it when people destroy their home, so if you break a beehive, they'll come out looking for revenge. Even if you innocently had the beehive thrown at you, you'll be the target. You can dodge all you want, but they'll probably get you in the end, and their stings'll do a LOT of damage.

Origin

A beehive in Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

The beehive item originates from the Animal Crossing games, and it is present in every installment of the series. Beehives occasionally fall out of oak and cedar trees when shaken. When one falls out, it hits the ground and a swarm of bees chase the Villager. If the Villager does not quickly go inside a building or catch a bee with a net, he or she gets stung, and given a swollen eye that must either be treated with medicine or heals on its own when the player quits the game and starts again. It wasn't until New Leaf that the player was able to pick up a beehive afterwards, as they simply disappeared in previous installments.

Coincidentally, beehives also exist in the Legend of Zelda series, with similar behaviour.
