A starter character is a character who is already available for play immediately after turning the game on for the first time; the player does not have to unlock, challenge, or download that character in order for him or her to be selectable (as one must do to select unlockable characters and downloadable characters).

It is currently unknown if the starting roster will consist of the original eight or twelve fighters from the first Super Smash Bros, as it was stated that the roster may be as small as that. The process for unlocking new fighters however has been "streamlined".

  • The 8 starter characters of Super Smash Bros. are the only playable characters to remain starter in every installment they appear in.
    • Samus is also the only female character to remain a starter in every installment she appears in.
    • Yoshi is also the only overall sole representative to remain a starter in every installment he appears in, as Captain Falcon was unlockable in Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
    • In addition, the entire Mario series is the only franchise with more than one starter character in Ultimate, being Mario himself, Donkey Kong and Yoshi.
  • Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is the only installment in the series where all of the original 12 characters appear as starters.
  • Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has the same number of starter characters as the number of total characters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, counting each type of Mii Fighter as seperate and counting each of the Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon as seperate, but not the Trainer himself.
  • The Yoshi series is the only one to contain starter characters.
