The Plain is the fifth stage of the Subspace Emissary. Mario and Pit appear here right on the Ancient Minister's Path.

The player has to choose to play as Mario or Pit. He/she starts by heading to the right. The player will meet some enemies, such as Borboras, Primids, Tickens and Feyeshes. Farther, there a huge wall of breakable blocks. On the top right of the highest section of the wall, just above there is an orange cube off screen. So just attacking upwards will hit it the cube down. A bit farther, some walls will rise up behind the character and push him to the right. There is a pit on the right with some breakable blocks going downwards.

Down the pit the player will notice Primids dropping down out of a gap in the ceiling. Up there, there is a hard to reach hidden door. If the player has Pit he/she will have an easier time reaching it than if he/she would have Mario. Mario can wall jump to reach the orange cube, but with Pit's jumping and Up+B recovery move he will have a much easier time getting it. Instead of having to wall jump up to it with Mario. Pit can use his up special move Wings of Icarus to go even higher and eventually see a platform on the right that he can land on. Remember Mario could wall jump this part, but it's much easier with Pit. In the hidden room, there are three things in this room:Trophy, Heart container, and an orange cube. After the gap there is another door.

In the next room, there is a moving platform where there is a forced battles. At the end of the ride, the player has to walk to the right to end the stage.

After you pass the level, a cut scene appears showing Mario and Pit trying to grab the Ancient Minister but fail.
