The Subspace Army is an evil force which is the main antagonist of the Subspace Emissary mode in SSBB. It is controlled by the Ancient Minister, and under the guidance of Tabuu. Its aim is to expand Subspace using Subspace Bombs to pull areas of 'this world' into Subspace. Most of the enemies the player faces in Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary are members of the Subspace Army.
Forces
The Subspace Army consists of a number of enemies, the Primids chief among them. These enemies are created from Shadow Bugs which are dropped from the Battleship Halberd. The Subspace Army also commands the Floating Island of the Ancients and the Subspace Gunship.
The army's weapons, equipment, and troops are almost all stolen or copied. Shadow Bug clones are made from trophy characters, and even standard troops are made from captured originals, with several army species seen imprisoned in the hijacked Halberd. Star Fox's Reflector technology and Samus's armor were apparently stolen, and Pikachu was used as a power supply. Master Hand was literally used as a puppet and the army used the Koopa Troop and R.O.B. squad to increase its forces and build more Subspace Bombs. Mr. Game & Watch was captured and used to produce Shadow Bugs.
Primids
Primids are the Subspace Armies standard troop. Their modest strength is made up for by large numbers. Specialization is also present, as there are
- Sword Primids (lightsword wielding Primids)
- Fire Primids
- Scope Primids (Primids with firearms)
- Normal Primids
- Metal Primids
- Big Primids
- Boom Primids
R.O.B. Units
- R.O.B. Sentry
- R.O.B. Launcher
- R.O.B. Blaster

Bowser's Squadron
There are certain inspired enemies (enemies that have been on previous video games). These enemies are only seen in The Jungle, The Lake, The Swamp, and The Great Maze.
Inspired Subspace Members
Many Subspace Army members were very similar and likely inspired by Kirby enemies. This is probably because Super Smash Bros. Brawl was created by the same company as the Kirby series.
- Glunder, Glire, and Glice were all likely inspired by the Flamer because of their similar appearances and movement patterns.
- Towtow may be based off of Scarfy because they both act innocent and take on a demonic appearance when attacked.
- Bucculus may be loosely based off of the Kirby enemy, Leap.
- Jyk serves the same purpose as the Gordo from the Kirby series.
- Roader was most likely inspired by the Wheelie Bike from Kirby Super Star.
- Spaak may have been based loosely off of the Kirby boss, Kracko.
Leader
Although at the beginning, Master Hand seems to be the prevailent leader of the Subspace Army, in a plot twist, he has merely been a minion for Tabuu, the true leader.
