Debuting in Brawl, there are a few attacks in the Smash Bros. series that can cause the rare paralyze effect. Targets hit by these attacks will be frozen in place for a short period of time, shaking back and forth, before taking knockback. The duration that the paralysis lasts for depends on how much knockback the move will do, and a unique paralysis multiplier attached to each paralyzing move. As such, moves that have knockback scaling (rather than fixed knockback like Zero Suit Samus's Paralyzer) will paralyze the opponent for longer as their percent increases. There is also a cap on how long a player can be paralyzed for. The user of the paralyzing effect can follow up with a smash attack or other powerful move during the paralysis, making the effect very strong. Repeatedly using a paralyzing attack will not increase the duration of the effect. This is often confused with the electric and stun effects.
The vast majority of paralyzing attacks are either Final Smashes, custom moves, or the effects of certain items or Smash Run enemies. Extremely few standard characters' moves can paralyze.
This is the only status that can affect other things besides characters, like items, causing them to shake.
The paralyze effect is weight independent, but knockback resistance (such as from the Metal Box) is not ignored.
