Lugia (Japanese: ルギア, Rugia) is a fictional creature in the Pokémon media franchise.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee

As a Poké Ball Pokémon

Lugia uses Aeroblast as its attack. When summoned, Lugia will remain on the screen for a few seconds and then fly off the screen to the background of the stage (similar to the movement of Ho-Oh). Lugia will release an Aeroblast that will travel around the stage. Any character that makes contact with the blast will take heavy damage and will be OHKO'd. Aeroblast has multiple hits, so this attack can be escaped with very quick and proper DI at 0%, but the player must be very fast and DI away from the aeroblast instead of DIing along with it due to it's unpredictable movement, speed, size, range, and heavy damage output in a small amount of time, this can make a mistake fatal. The move can inflict up to 440% in a little over 2 seconds, with 20% damage per attack connection. Any character that makes contact with Lugia while it remains on the stage will take damage and will be knocked back rather far, similar to Moltres, yet not quite as far. Lugia's body's knockback and damage is identical to Electrode's Explosion. Due to Lugia being a Legendary Pokémon, the chance of Lugia's appearance is very rare, only topped by Mew, Celebi, and Jirachi. The chance of Lugia appearing out of a Poké Ball is doubled when the event match Legendary Pokémon is played. Lugia's attack does not harm the summoner. Lugia is arguably one of the best Pokémon in Melee, as touching it KOs under 100%, its Aeroblast OHKOs and can deal over 400% damage in 2 seconds, and it covers a very large area, an example would be battlefield, if the player opened a pokeball in the center of the stage and found lugia, it's aeroblast could hit players sitting next to the ledges and above on the top platform and higher. Luigia's hitbox is roughly the same range as Moltres, until Moltres reaches its maximum hitbox size by flying to the top of the screen, where it's hitbox becomes larger than Lugia's. It is also possible for Lugia to KO the same opponent twice, but a wise player would stay on the revival platform if they got KO'd touching it.

Lugia features as a collectible trophy, unlocked as one of the 100+ trophies that can be collected randomly during normal play, such as in the Trophy Lottery and throughout the various Single-player Regular Matches. It reads as follows:

Lugia lives quietly in the deepest ocean trenches for one very good reason: its combined aerial and psychic powers are so strong as to be extremely dangerous. The special moves of this gargantuan creature include the destructive wind assault known as Aeroblast.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Lugia reprises its role from Super Smash Bros. Melee. When it emerges out of its Poké Ball, it will fly into the background and use Aeroblast, as it did in Super Smash Bros. Melee, but with a more detailed blast. Lugia was nerfed in Brawl, as touching it no longer has strong KO power (though it can still star KO opponents above 100% if the opponent does not DI), its Aeroblast no longer OHKOs, and it covers a smaller area. It does one hit instead of multiple hits. However, Aeroblast can KO at percentages as low as 35%, if the opponent doesn't utilize DI and Momentum Cancelling, and despite the nerfs, it is still arguably one of the strongest Pokémon in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

As a Trophy

A Diving Pokémon. A legendary Pokémon often referred to as "guardian of the seas," it has the impressive ability to control the wind. Lugia typically spends its time quietly at the bottom of the ocean. Highly powerful in all areas, Lugia's Aeroblast move is especially powerful. It uses strong flapping of its wings to target damage on a foe's weak spot.
