Andross, known in Japan as Andorf (アンドルフ Andorufu), is the foremost villain in the Star Fox series. He appears as two separate trophies in Super Smash Bros. Melee and an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Character description

Andross is an ape and a mad scientist and tyrant in the Lylat System of the Star Fox universe who was banished to the planet of Venom for dangerous and unethical experiments. In the original Star Fox for the Super Nintendo, Andross was the final stage boss, and due to the extremely limited 3D capabilities of the SNES, he appeared as a huge white polygonal face which spewed forth tiles to damage the player.

It was not until Star Fox 64 that he was seen in fleshy, albeit super-powered form. With the game essentially a remake of the original game with far greater graphical and cinematic value, Andross was given his far more realistic, albeit nightmarish, appearance as the final boss of the game; following his banishment to Venom, he conducted biological experiments on himself to transform himself into a colossal, disembodied head with remote-controlled hands, which is what Fox McCloud's arwing battles against. If the hard/true route was taken to Venom in the game, his form would peel off to reveal an empowered, and still able and functioning, brain. This battle had officially marked the end of Andross's life, but he reappears in some form in future games.

He has not had a starring role in the Super Smash Bros. series despite being the most recurring antagonist in the series, but he cameos in two separate trophies in Super Smash Bros. Melee, and his original polygonal form makes a more interactive cameo appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

As trophies

Andross makes two separate appearances as trophies, one being the only trophy in the game that is classified as "rare":

Andross (Rare)

"Star Fox's archenemy. Whether it's a metallic manifestation of Andross or just a hologram is unknown, but from its outward appearance, it's safe to assume that it's not the fiend's true form. Andross occasionally sucks matter in and then violently exhales, sending out a cloud of metal tiles. Its eyes are its weak points."

Andross

"This incarnation of Andross was so big as to be ridiculous, but it at least appeared to be a living being. Andross was once a brilliant scientist, but was banished from the galaxy for his dangerous experiments. From the planet Venom, he readied his troops and directed his sword of vengeance toward the Lylat System."

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the original SNES version of Andross appears as an Assist Trophy, and thus also a collectible trophy.

As an Assist Trophy

When Andross appears out of an assist trophy, he floats up off the screen and flies towards the back of the stage and spits polygon panels out of his mouth. Characters hit by the panels will take around 12 damage, while the tiles go right through the one who summoned him.

Andross

A brilliant scientist formerly employed by the Cornerian Army. He took his research too far, and the disastrous results labeled him a Level 1 offender, resulting in his banishment to the nearby planet Venom. After building a base and declaring himself emperor, he swore he would rule the Lylat system. Thanks to Team Star Fox's heroism, the madman has yet to achieve this.
