(The 3DS menu takes you straight to a friends list, and selecting "create room" brings the usual char select. Didn't think either was important so I didn't capture them, but I can if needed. Don't have anyone to do gameplay screenshots, but tag if those are wanted too)

When you start up Brawl's Wi-Fi multiplayer mode, you have two options. They are With Friends and With Anyone. In With Friends, you can only play with friends that you have on your Friend List. Unlike With Anyone, records are actually kept and names will be seen. Opponents will be able to see your icon and comments about yourself before battle. The number of ways you can play is also much more expansive.
Regular versus mode matches can be played with all the usual options, but Special mode and 8-Player Smash are not available. Players can set short custom messages to appear when they taunt in a With Friends match. In Brawl, Home-Run Contest and Multi-Man Smash could also be played. In forwiiu, voice chat can be enabled in With Friends, using the Wii U gamepad's microphone.

In addition to normal Brawls, you can also play co-op Home-Run Contest and Multi-Man Brawl. During normal Brawls, you will also have much more customization options such as shouting out short, predetermined messages by taunting.
Various websites, such as All is Brawl, Anther's Ladder, and Smashmate, would be created to make use of With Friends matches, serving as an alternative to the usual rulesets Brawl and Smash 4 use, which were often seen as flawed and uncompetitive. These websites would often host rated ladders as well, allowing for more high-stakes matches to be played by more serious players.

Friends playing a match on Battlefield, as depicted by Brawl's manual.

With Friends is one of two online multiplayer modes in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. 4, the other being With Anyone. In this mode, the player can only play with players registered on their friend roster. In Brawl, this is the only online mode where records are kept and names can be seen. Opponents will be able to see the player's profile icon and comment before battle. In Ultimate, this was feature was replaced with Battle Arenas, which allows the creation of password and friend-limited arenas.

Regular versus mode matches can be played with all the usual options, but Special mode and 8-Player Smash are not available. Players can set short custom messages to appear when they taunt in a With Friends match. In Brawl, Home-Run Contest and Multi-Man Smash could also be played. In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, voice chat can be enabled in With Friends, using the Wii U gamepad's microphone.
