Rare (Pokémon)

Chansey, known in Japan as Lucky (ラッキー, Rakkī), is a fictional creature in the Pokémon media franchise.

Creature description

Chansey is a moderately large, pink egg-shaped, egg-carrying Pokémon. In-game Pokédex entries state it is a rare and elusive species that is said to bring happiness to those who manage to catch it. It lays several nutritionally excellent eggs on an everyday basis, and puts them in its pouch. The eggs are delicious enough that they are easily and eagerly devoured by even those people who have lost their appetite, and if treated with love and care by a trainer, its eggs appear to become even more delicious. Gentle and kindhearted, it shares its nutritious eggs if it sees an injured person or Pokémon, which another reason why it is said to deliver happiness. It won't share its eggs with those who have evil in their hearts. It walks very carefully to prevent its egg from breaking, but it is extremely fast at running away.

Chansey appeared as one of the original 151 Pokémon in the original Pokémon. A player could only obtain a Chansey in either the Safari Zone or the Unknown Dungeon. In Pokémon GS, Chansey would evolve into Blissey once it had reached max "Happiness", and was established as always being female with the introduction of sexes. In Pokémon DS, a pre-evolutionary form called Happiny was introduced. Chansey has also made numerous appearances in the animated TV series where it would normally be seen in Pokémon Centers aiding Nurse Joy in operations.

One notable feature about Chansey is the egg in its pouch. Chansey can use that egg to heal itself, other Pokémon, or humans with the SoftBoiled move. It can also use the egg for defensive purposes by launching it using Egg Bomb.

As a Poké Ball Pokémon

Chansey makes its first debut in Super Smash Bros., using SoftBoiled as its "attack". During each appearance, it will give up to three eggs which contain items in them.

As a stage element

Chansey also appears in the Saffron City stage and gives a single egg when it appears out of the door of the Silph Building (unless items have been turned off). Also, it cures a small amount of damage when touching players. Chansey can be KO'd by characters and by items; however, there is no reward for doing so.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee

As a Poké Ball Pokémon

Chansey makes another appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Chansey's attributes are identical to those from the previous game, except now it will give up to five eggs. These eggs, being normal Eggs, will either heal, contain an item, or explode.

As a stage element

A giant balloon of Chansey (in actuality, the 3D model of Chansey used in Pokémon Stadium for Nintendo 64) is one of the many floating and bending "platforms" that comprise the Poké Floats stage. Compared to the other balloons, Chansey's balloon appears and disappears rather rapidly and jerkily.

As a trophy

Chansey features as a collectible trophy, unlocked as one of the 100+ trophies that can be collected randomly during normal play, such as in the Trophy Lottery and throughout the various Single-player Regular Matches. It reads as follows:

Renowned for its kind temperament, Chansey has been known to offer injured creatures its highly nutritious egg to aid their recovery. Legend has it that this charitable creature brings happiness to anyone who captures it. All Chansey are female, and every now and then one is found in possession of a Lucky Egg.
