Template:PokeballPokemon Staryu, known in Japan as Hitdodeman (ヒトデマン, Hitodeman), is a fictional creature in the Pokémon media franchise.

Creature description

Staryu is a large, orange starfish with a red jewel in its center. As stated in the Pokédex, in this enigmatic specie's center section is an organ called the core, which shines bright red. If you go to a beach toward the end of summer at midnight, the glowing cores of many Staryu look like the stars of the sky. It apparently communicates with the stars in the night sky by flashing its red core in the rhythm of a human heartbeat. It can regenerate its five limbs if they are severed from or chopped off its body, provided the red core remains.

In the anime, Staryu can also release water from the top point on its head. In the video games, Staryu eventually evolves into Starmie, which are purple in appearance and have more points on them. Their core is now an octagon, and they're accredited with high Special statistics.

As a Poké Ball Pokémon

Staryu appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee out of Poké Balls. Its attack is similar to the attack of Starmie from SSB. It will fly around the screen to find another character to shoot at. Once it stops moving and targets a character, Staryu will start to use Swift. Staryu will not move once it starts using Swift. Any character that makes contact with Swift will take damage. Any character can also take damage if they touch Staryu while it's using Swift attack. Staryu's attack does not harm the summoner.

As a trophy

Staryu features as a collectible trophy, unlocked as one of the 250+ trophies that can be collected randomly during normal play, such as in the Trophy Lottery and throughout the various Single-player Regular Matches. It reads as follows:

These Starshape Pokémon that evolve into Starmie are found in large numbers at the seashore. At night, Staryu's red center glows and blinks on and off. It's said that as long as its red center remains, it can regrow its limbs. Whether it's related to Cleffa, another Pokémon with a vaguely star-shaped appearance, is unknown.

As a Poké Ball Pokémon

Staryu appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl out of Poké Balls in a reprisal of its previous role, with the same method of attacking. It appears to have a quicker rate of fire. Pit's shield, however, can reflect this attack.

Pokédex Entry

Its body is torn, it can grow back if the red core remains. The core flashes at midnight.
