Port Priority 9 was a Super Smash Bros. regional and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate supermajor held in Seattle, Washington from November 8th-9th, 2025, returning after a year-long hiatus that skipped 2024. The event featured a theme around the 1990s.
Tournament summary[edit]
This event was the final supermajor of the UltRank 2025 season, and notably the first major event after the rankings reverted back to the "UltRank" branding. Though the top 5 players — Doramigi, acola, Hurt, Miya, and Sparg0 — were not present at the event, Port Priority 9 still featured many top players, including 9 of the top 20. Among these players include international players attending their first American events — notably Carmelo, Sin, Jagabata, and Furararamen. In addition, this marked Tweek's first major event since his retirement and would have been Onin's first notable event back from their own hiatus, though they eventually dropped out; their dropout was later revealed to be the result of their ban from the event, due to then-ongoing investigations regarding their conduct.
This event finally broke Sonix's streak of runner-up finishes and his struggle to win a major within the last 2 years, as he won the tournament without dropping a set, defeating Zomba 3-2 in Grand Finals in a sort of "runback" to Sonix's loss at GENESIS X, one of the first few events that began his "second-place curse" at major and superregional events. As such, Sonix's victory marked his first major win since The Coinbox IRL and his first supermajor victory since the previous Port Priority. For the rest of the top 8, #55 seed Lammers44 placed 7th using solo-Mii Gunner, becoming the first Mii Gunner to place top 8 at a major and achieving the best Mii Gunner performance in the game, while Mild na H.O became the first Donkey Kong player to place top 8 at a North American major, after having done so several times in Japan throughout the year. In addition, Toriguri finished 5th after being eliminated by Zomba in their runback, the 6th time he has reached Banjo & Kazooie's highest major placement.
Outside of the top 8, three notable Losers runs took place. After an early loss to #111 seed umanz (upset factor 5), #18 seed BeastModePaul won his next 7 sets, eliminating players such as zawg, MFA, and Sin along the way, outperforming his seed and finish 13th. Similarly, #32 seed Jagabata took an early loss to #97 seed LRA_START (upset factor 4) but went on an 8-set Losers run where he eliminated players such as KEN, BassMage, and Sisqui to finish just outside the top 8. Lastly, this event served as SHADIC's return to form following his underperformances over the 2025 season. After losing his winners side top 32 qualifier to Carmelo, he went on a 4 set losers run defeating PkChris, Reno, Raflow, and finally ShinyMark, the latter of which in a reverse 3-0 from a severe stock and percent deficit in both games 3 and 5 before bowing out at 9th losing to Lammers44.
Conversely, half of the top 8 seeds underperformed greatly. Most notable among these underperformances was #8 seed MkLeo, who went 2-2 in tournament after losing to #57 seed Yeast (upset factor 6) before being eliminated 3-0 by #81 seed rm8 (upset factor 7) for 65th, his worst performance in Ultimate and tying his performance at 2GGC: Civil War and EVO 2017 as his worst placements of his career. In addition, #1 seed Syrup lost to Lui$ (upset factor 10) and Monte (upset factor 8) to place 25th; #6 seed Tweek lost to Sin (upset factor 6) and Toon to place 25th; and #7 seed Asimo lost to Lammers44 (upset factor 6) and Toon to place 17th. Finally, Furararamen's debut international event fell flat, as he drowned in pools after losing to SoulArts and Karflo to place 129th.
Invited players[edit]
Several players were invited to attend the event for being the highest-placing eligible/available player at certain events:
Tarik (2nd at Smashborg: Siege 2025)
BeastModePaul (2nd at Collision 2025)
Asimo (2nd at Sumabato SP 62)
Whisky (9th at LEGENDS 6)
Financial loss[edit]
Prior to the event, head organizer Gyromight revealed that the event was going to lose $21,000 at worst, forcing him to take money out of his personal funds. He attributed the loss to the weaker economy in the United States leading to rising costs and the team's focus on making the event affordable, leading to only a $5 increase to the entry fee, a rise that was not enough to cover the losses due to lower attendance from the previous event. As such, a GoFundMe was opened to cover some of the tournament losses.[1] The following day, the cost was corrected, after Gyromight revealed that the invoice had a $12,000 error and the venue also removed an additional $2,000 due to the error.[2]
