'''Yoshi's Island''' ({{ja|ヨッシーアイランド|Yosshīairando}}, ''Yoshi Island'') is a stage in ''[[Super Smash Bros.]]'' and is {{SSB|Yoshi}}'s home stage. It is also a playable stage (as '''[[Past Stages]]: Yoshi's Island''') in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'', unlocked by hitting [[Sandbag]] 1,312.4 ft (400m) in the [[Home Run Contest]].
'''Yoshi's Island''' ({{ja|ヨッシーアイランド|Yosshīairando}}, ''Yoshi Island'') is a stage in ''[[Super Smash Bros.]]'' and ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]''.

This stage comes from ''Yoshi's Story''. In ''Yoshi's Story'' there are clouds that can be used as platforms. Some clouds have to be activated by a switch that runs on a timer. When the time runs out the clouds disappear. In this stage there are cloud platforms on each side of this stage, but they look different from the cloud platforms in ''Yoshi's Story''. When a player stands on a cloud for too long the cloud disappears. This may be a reference to the clouds that disappear when the time runs out. In ''Yoshi's Story'' there are hint boxes that give out hints when hit. The hint boxes can be seen in the background of this stage. The opening of ''Yoshi's Story'' states that ''Yoshi's Island'' has been turned into a story book and that the [[supermariowiki:Super_Happy_Tree|Super Happy Tree]] is gone because of [[supermariowiki:Baby_Bowser|Baby Bowser]]. The main bottom platform of this stage resembles a book so this could be a reference to how ''Yoshi's Island'' has been turned into a story book. Towards the ending of ''Yoshi's Story'', Yoshi confronts Baby Bowser. In the same room is the Super Happy Tree. The Super Happy Tree looks very similar to the one that is in the background of this stage. In the ending of ''Yoshi's Story'', there is also a Super Happy Heart that is growing on the tree. But the design of the heart has more resemblance to the heart that is shown when completing a level in ''Yoshi's Story''. The clouds and sun seen in ''Yoshi's Story'' also looks similar to the one in this stage. In ''[[Yoshi's Island]]'' there are enemy birds called "[[supermariowiki:Goonie|Goonies]]". Goonies also appear in ''Yoshi's Story''. In this stage a Goonie can be seen flying across this stage and its design resembles the design used in ''Yoshi's Story''. Also from ''Yoshi's Story'' are "Fly Guys" which are flying Shy Guys. Fly Guys can also be seen flying across this stage. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3T4a4JjN3Ec]
Visually, the stage looks like it's made of cardboard. The main platform is an open book, and as such it has a V shape instead of being completely flat. Over the main platform hover three [[soft platform]]s: the bottom two slightly slope inwards, while the top one is flat.

In the sky surrounding the main stage float three clouds, one on the left side and two on the right. After standing on a cloud for about four seconds it will disappear: this can be prevented by repeatedly jumping instead of standing continuously on it. Disappeared clouds reappear after seven more seconds. {{iw|mariowiki|Message Block}}s hover in the background above the clouds, but they have no gameplay effect.

The music used in this stage is a mix between level one of ''Yoshi's Story'' and ''Yoshi's Story's'' title screen. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YwhPVnLw3s]
[[Goonie]]s and [[Fly Guy]]s occasionally fly in the background, but do not interact with the players.

The version of this stage in ''[[Super Smash Bros.]]''' [[1P Game]] is slightly smaller and lacks the clouds.
The stage has a paper and cardboard sort of look. The main platform is on a book. There are three platforms that hover above it. The bottom two are sloping inward a little bit while the top one is flat. On the left side of the stage, there is one cloud, while on the right side, there are two clouds (one near the stage while the other on the other side). The clouds will disappear after standing on them for about four seconds, but will reappear seven seconds later. This can be avoided by repeatedly jumping on the clouds without letting them disappear.

==Tournament legality==
In both ''Smash 64'' and ''Melee'' Yoshi's Island is banned, primarily because the clouds can promote [[camping]]. Additionally, some characters such as {{SSB|Link}} in ''Smash 64'' and {{SSBM|Falco}} in ''Melee'' are unable to recover if they are lured onto some of the clouds.

Strangely enough, during the second round in ''[[Super Smash Bros.]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki> [[1P Game]], the clouds on the sides of the stage are absent, and the stage is a bit smaller. A GameShark code can be entered to enable this stage with these alterations.

Yoshi's Island (ヨッシーアイランド, Yoshi Island) is a stage in Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Stage layout

The stage in Melee.

Visually, the stage looks like it's made of cardboard. The main platform is an open book, and as such it has a V shape instead of being completely flat. Over the main platform hover three soft platforms: the bottom two slightly slope inwards, while the top one is flat.

In the sky surrounding the main stage float three clouds, one on the left side and two on the right. After standing on a cloud for about four seconds it will disappear: this can be prevented by repeatedly jumping instead of standing continuously on it. Disappeared clouds reappear after seven more seconds. Message Blocks hover in the background above the clouds, but they have no gameplay effect.

Goonies and Fly Guys occasionally fly in the background, but do not interact with the players.

The version of this stage in Super Smash Bros.' 1P Game is slightly smaller and lacks the clouds.

Tournament legality

In both Smash 64 and Melee Yoshi's Island is banned, primarily because the clouds can promote camping. Additionally, some characters such as Link in Smash 64 and Falco in Melee are unable to recover if they are lured onto some of the clouds.

Origin

The Super Happy Tree in Yoshi's Story.

This stage and its aesthetics are inspired by Yoshi's Story. In that game, Baby Bowser has turned Yoshi's Island in a storybook and stolen the Super Happy Tree, the magical tree which also appears in this stage's background.

Yoshi's Story features clouds that can be used as platforms, some of which have to be activated by pressing a switch and disappear when the switch's timer runs out. However, their design is different from the ones in this stage.

Message Blocks appear in some Mario and Yoshi games, and give hints when hit. Their design in this stage is the one from the Yoshi series.

Goonies and Fly Guys are enemies from the Yoshi series, which appear in this stage with their Yoshi's Story design.

Trivia

  • In Smash 64 the background with the sun, clouds, and ocean remains still no matter which direction the camera faced, giving the appearance of a green screen, but in Melee the background is rendered in 3D.
  • In Smash 64, eggs spawn on this stage instead of capsules.
  • This is the only stage in Smash 64 to have an orange background in Training mode.
    • Interestingly, the game's Stage Select screen is arranged in a checkerboard fashion regarding stage background colors, with all other stages featuring sky blue (with a lighter blue smash logo) or black (with a red smash logo) backgrounds. The Yoshi's Island icon lines up symmetrically with the Random Stage button, presumably for aesthetic purposes.
  • This is the only Smash 64 stage in Melee that's not in Smash 4.
