Yoshi (ヨッシー, Yosshī) was confirmed to return as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. 4 during the April 8th, 2014 Super Smash Bros. Direct. He is among the first wave of amiibo figures. Yoshi is voiced by Kazumi Totaka.
Yoshi is a green denizen of Yoshi's Island and traditionally has been the sole representative of the Yoshi series. He was the last of the eight starting characters of Super Smash Bros. to be announced.
Changes from Brawl
Like Bowser, Yoshi now stands up straighter after having stood hunched over like a dinosaur in the previous Smash games. This is translated into his moveset, be it through a tweaked animation or through a completely new attack. The straighter pose also adjusts Yoshi's hitbox so that it is less awkwardly shaped.
Yoshi has been significantly buffed from Brawl. His moves have more speed, utility, and combo ability, greatly increasing his offensive options; he can additionally now jump out of shield, which drastically improves his defensive game.
- Neutral attack hit 1 can now set up moves more reliably, particularly up smashes.
- Forward and down tilts have been sped up.
- Yoshi has a new dash attack: a running kick. Compared to the old headbutt, it has more range, less lag, and a longer slide afterwards.
- Down smash has much stronger knockback, and is now a reliable KOing move again.
- Forward aerial, as with some other meteor smashes, is much faster.
- Yoshi is able to jump out of shield for the first time since the original SSB. This greatly expands his defensive options and allows him to combat pressuring situations with much greater ease than in Brawl. [1]
- Egg Roll no longer puts Yoshi into a helpless state.
- Thrown eggs travel faster.
- Yoshi Bomb has been given KOing potential again, restoring its niche as a finisher and a potent surprise tactic.
- Back aerial now has a more accentuated final hit, is stronger and now only hits three times as opposed to four which makes the move safer to use.
- Down aerial's final blow now hits grounded opponents horizontally and aerial opponents upwards, which makes the move safer to use on grounded, non-shielding opponents. The animation is also significantly faster and is stronger.
- Yoshi has a new up smash: a backflip kick similar to Fox's. Compared to the old headbutt, it is faster with more knockback.
- Yoshi's double jump now decelerates after starting at full speed.
- The eggs formed with Yoshi's on-screen appearance, shield, Egg Throw, and Egg Roll now match his selected color.
- Yoshi no longer vocalises when performing Yoshi Bomb.
- Yoshi is lighter than in Brawl, now tied with Link and Captain Falcon.
Yoshi looks significantly more cartoony and somewhat re-proportioned, more closely resembling his recent appearances in the Mario and Yoshi games. His skin is now a bright green instead of the more reserved dark green skin present in Brawl.
Moveset
Ground attacks
Normal attacks
- Neutral attack - Yoshi quickly kicks with his left leg, then his right leg.
- Dash attack - Yoshi performs a dashing kick, followed by an awkward stumble.
- Forward tilt - Yoshi spins and swipes opponents with his tail. A very reliable attack.
- Up tilt - Yoshi crouches down and flicks his tail skyward.
- Down tilt - Yoshi performs a low sweep with his tail.
Smash attacks
- Forward smash - Yoshi slams his head forward as a powerful headbutt.
- Up smash - Yoshi performs a quick back-flip kick.
- Down smash - Yoshi quickly strikes both sides with his tail.
Aerial attacks
- Neutral aerial - Yoshi performs a sex kick. The size of his foot is larger during the attack to indicate an extended reach.
- Forward aerial - Yoshi winds up up and slams his head downward. It has a slightly tweaked animation in that Yoshi now bends his head to the side while performing the attack.
- Back aerial - Yoshi rapdily wags his tail, swatting opponents in the process. The final hit has been accentuated.
- Up aerial - Yoshi flips his body and thrusts his tail upward.
- Down aerial - Yoshi rapidly peddles his feet as he descends. It is a reference to his fluttering ability in Yoshi's Island. The final blow can now hit opponents horizontally, improving the attack's potential on grounded opponents.
Special Moves
In Super Smash Bros. 4, special moves can be swapped out for different variants. Yoshi retains all of his original special moves and his Final Smash. These are Yoshi's special moves:
- Neutral special - Egg Lay: Yoshi quickly extends and retracts his trademark tongue. If it captures an opponent, the opponent will quickly be swallowed and expelled trapped in a Yoshi Egg. Opponents remained trapped longer if they have a considerable amount of damage. The larger the opponent swallowed, the larger the Egg will be.
- Side special - Egg Roll: Yoshi enters an Egg and rolls across the stage. The player can choose where Yoshi rolls and when to end the move, although Yoshi will eventually stop if performing the move for too long. It is challenging to stop this attack, with the best option being to dodge.
- Up special - Egg Throw: Yoshi grabs an Egg and throws it. Like in Yoshi's Island, the player can angle the direction the Egg is thrown. It is one of the few up specials that does not handicap the player after using it, mainly because it is not a recovery move. However, Yoshi will briefly stall in the air after to throw his Egg, making the move somewhat as reliable as Cape. In this installment, the Eggs travel considerably faster and now leave a rainbow trail to better indicate its trajectory.
- Down special - Yoshi Bomb: Yoshi thrusts himself skyward and slams himself into the ground. It is based off of his "Ground Pound" ability in Yoshi's Island. Yoshi produces two stars on either side of him when he lands, which can damage opponents Yoshi didn't directly hit.
Special Move | Basic | Custom 1 | Custom 2 |
---|---|---|---|
Neutral Special | Egg Lay | Lick | Egg Launch |
Side Special | Egg Roll | Heavy Egg Roll | Light Egg Roll |
Up Special | Egg Throw | High Jump | Timed Egg Throw |
Down Special | Yoshi Bomb | Star Bomb | Crushing Bomb |
Final Smash | Super Dragon |
Final Smash
- Super Dragon: Yoshi's final smash from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. He sprouts wings and gains the ability to fly. As he hovers across the stage, Yoshi can shoot balls of fire at opponents too far away for him to hit directly. While the player can control when to shoot fireballs, Yoshi will do so automatically as well. The attack may be based on the various abilities Yoshi can have in Super Mario World.
Taunts
- Dances around in a circle and cries "Yoshi!" upon finishing.
- Yoshi chases his tail, followed by a brief pause to stare at it.
- Looks towards the screen and jumps excitedly up and down with his arms flailing. He cries "Yoshi! Yoshi!" The taunt originates from Super Smash Bros.
On-Screen Appearance
Yoshi bursts out of a Yoshi Egg. The palette swap determines the color of the Egg's spots.
Victory Fanfare
A flourished remix directly from Brawl based on the beginning of the title theme in Yoshi's Story.
Trophies
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS trophy descriptions
- Yoshi
- NA As dependable a partner as one could hope for, Yoshi often aids Mario in his adventures. Yoshi can swallow just about anything and make an egg of it instantly. He's got some serious airborne power, making launching opponents skyward and then following up with more attacks a wise choice.
- PAL: They say man's best friends is a dog, but Mario's may well be Yoshi. He lives on Yoshi's Island, and can swallow up just about anything, then lay it as an egg. In this game, jumping is his forte - he can leap really high, then quickly land again, making chasing after launched opponents and getting in sneaky follow-up strikes easy.
- Yoshi (Alt.)
- NA: Yoshi's up special move Egg Throw is a projectile attack that travels farther the longer the button is held. Yoshi will also rise a bit if this move is used in midair. The side special Egg Roll turns Yoshi into a rolling, damaging egg. Yoshi won't roll off an edge if no directions are pressed.
- PAL: When you use the Egg Throw up special, how far Yoshi throws the egg depends on how long you hold the button. In mid-air, the move also makes him rise a bit. Egg Roll, a side special, sends him rolling inside an egg. If you don't control him while he's rolling, he'll stop just before he rolls off the edge of a platform.
