A starter character is a character who is already available for play immediately after turning the game on for the first time; the player does not have to unlock, challenge, or download that character in order for him or her to be selectable (as one must do to select unlockable characters and downloadable characters).

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
It is currently unknown if the starting roster will consist of the original eight or twelve fighters from the first Super Smash Bros, as it was stated that the roster may be as small as that. The process for unlocking new fighters however has been "streamlined". It is also unknown about the availability of the Mii Fighters.
