The editor who added this tag believes this page should be cleaned up for the following reason: Needs damage %s, and animation of attacks.
You can discuss this issue on the talk page or edit this page to improve it.

A strong up, also known as an up tilt (abbreviated "u-tilt") is a tilt attack that can be performed by any character by holding the control stick lightly upward and pressing the attack button while on the ground. It can be difficult to pull off an up tilt quickly, as if the player tilts too fast, they'll either jump or do an up smash instead. Turning off tap jump can help avoid the former problem, or the player can do some other action and hold up on the control stick before it ends.

More often than not, up tilts are used for juggling, as they usually lack the knockback to disturb low damage combos outside of a few exceptions such as Ganondorf and Captain Falcon.

Since the Wii remote-only control scheme lacks both a control stick and any other way to jump, up tilts become unusable without first holding up during a prior action, making them the only attack which a player may not be able to use for no in-game reason.

Kirby's up tilt in Brawl.

List of up tilts in Super Smash Bros.

  • Kirby: An upwards kick. One of the overall best tilts in all Super Smash Bros. games. Guarantees low percentage combos against everyone. Incredibly high priority and a disjointed hitbox around twice the size of the original move. Extremely low starting and ending lag. Usually used into a short hop forward aerial attack, back aerial, or down aerial to tech chase. Back aerials lead into them as well as down aerials. 14%
  • Pikachu: Swings its tail. Good up tilt with good combo ability, some range, and high priority, used to combo into grabs and up smash usually. Has too much cooldown to rival Kirby's up tilt. Can be used after back aerials and other aerials as well. 9-11%
  • Ness: A two-handed open-palm uppercut. Good combo ability, low start up lag, but very small range. Ness' staple combo move, usually used after a double jump cancel to combo into another DJC. 3%
  • Yoshi: An upwards headbutt. Yoshi's main combo starter vs fast fallers and medium weights. Sends Jigglypuff and Kirby too high to combo. Similar to Ness how it is usually used after a double jump cancel to combo into further DJCs. Also leads into up tilt to up smash KOs. Has large ending lag but surprising range. Has set knockback. 11%
  • Captain Falcon: Puts his leg up high and drops it. Has two hits, one while rising the knee, and one by slamming it down. Good knockback but low range and almost no combo ability outside of being next to a wall. First hit, 4-9%, second hit, 6-14%.
  • Donkey Kong: Swings his hands in an arc. High starting and ending lag but good knockback and range, best used as a surprise KO usually for lighter characters. 13%
  • Mario: Spins around and punches upwards. Good for combos, but has too much ending lag and moderately low priority to be very reliable. 10% damage.
  • Luigi: An upward punch. Similar to Mario's but with slightly more range, lag, and knockback. Can combo into an up special or a up aerial. 10%
  • Jigglypuff: Swings its foot behind itself. Similar to Pikachu's but slightly less versatile, quicker, and has less range. Good combo ability and works great into Rest. A staple Jigglypuff combo is down aerial, up tilt x 3 (or more depending on character) and into a rest. 10%
  • Samus: Puts her leg up high and drops it. Considered one of the worst moves in the entire game. High lag both starting up and ending. Essentially Captain Falcon's up tilt but with much less priority and knockback. First hit, 3-8%, second hit, 5-13% second hit.
  • Link: Swings his sword in an arc above him. A very good combo starter. Usually used to combo into other up tilts or aerials, high priority but moderate ending lag. Good range. This move is further enhanced in the Japanese SSB due to its increased combo ability and increased range. 10%
  • Fox: Kicks upwards. A good combo starter as well. Used into short hop down aerials or into up aerials. Little range compared to the other "good" up tilts. 9%

List of up tilts in Super Smash Bros. Melee

Character Description Damage
Bowser Claws upwards. Good knockback, good for setting up combos. 7-11%
Captain Falcon Lifts his leg up, then slams it downwards. It has horizontal knockback. 11%
Donkey Kong Sweeps upwards. Good for juggling. 9-11%
Dr. Mario An upward punch, similar to Mario's with more knockback. Different trajectory depending on where it hits. If hit from the front, the opponent will be sent in front, and if hit above, the opponent will be sent above. 10%
Falco Kicks behind himself, similar to Fox's but with less range and power. 9%
Fox Kicks behind and above himself. Starts quickly and is relatively powerful for an up tilt. Great combo starter. 12%
Ganondorf Known as the Volcano Kick. Lifts his leg up, then smashes it into the ground. Slowest move in the game (72 frames), though very powerful, can even OHKO if hits by the edge due to its extremely high base knockback. Is by far the most powerful tilt in the game, it can KO even earlier than the Warlock Punch. 27%
Ice Climbers The Ice Climbers twirl their hammers above themselves. Hits multiple times. Up to 21% if all hits connect with both climbers.
Jigglypuff Kicks upwards behind it. Surprisingly good at combos, can chain into it at low percentages, and at higher percentages it is a great setup for an aerial attack. 9%
Kirby Thrusts his leg behind and upwards. High shield damage. 8%
Link Swings his sword in an arc above him. Among Link's most flexible moves on the ground; it has good combo potential, it's rather fast with minimal ending lag, and it has good knockback. 9%
Luigi Swipes over his head. Good for juggling. Its upward trajectory makes up tilt well suited for comboing, especially against fast-fallers. Hits at an upwards angle in the front and back of him. 4-9%
Mario Punches upwards. A good juggling move. Good juggling move, as well as a rather good combo starter. 8%
Marth Swings his sword in a large arc above his head. Useful for juggling and can set up an aerial combo. Looks like the first hit of his neutral attack, though aims a bit higher. It also bears resemblance to his forward tilt. At high percentages, it is an extremely effective KO move, KOing reliably at 90% and above. 9% base, 12% tip.
Mewtwo Flips upwards, hitting with it's tail. 5-10%
Mr. Game & Watch Pulls out a flag and waves it above his head. Good for comboing. 9%
Ness Thrusts his hands upwards. 7%
Peach Hits her crown upwards. Does not have much combo potential, but can be followed up by correctly spaced aerials and the Peach Parasol. 6-12%
Pichu Swings its tail upwards, similar to Pikachu's. Very low range and somewhat slow, though sets up for aerial combos and follow ups. 6%
Pikachu Swings tail upwards. This attack is hard to set up, as it has low range, as well as low priority. The low knockback works well for juggles and combos however, as it sends opponents upward. 7%
Roy Swings his sword in an arc above him. Similar to Marth but slightly slower. 9-10%
Samus Lifts her leg up then brings it down. Similar to Captain Falcon's. It is a meteor smash according to the game, but it only works on grounded opponents. The meteor can KO grounded opponents at high percentage. 13%
Sheik Kicks up, then kicks down. Can be chained on heavyweights, and has an infinite on Bowser. 8% first hit, 3% second hit.
Yoshi Swipes his tail upwards. Fast but short-ranged. 10%
Young Link Swings his sword in an arc above him. Similar to Link's but slightly faster. Can KO around 120% and KOs faster than his up smash. 8%
Zelda Waves her hand above herself infused with magic. Very powerful and has transcendent priority. 11%

Notable up tilts

  • Marth's up tilt, a high-range, upward swipe with the sword that combos into subsequent up tilts or Up smashes at low damage, and can KO enemies at high damage.
  • Ganondorf's up tilt has the longest set startup of any move in SSBM; in Brawl, it also creates a vacuum that draws other characters towards him.
  • Fox, Lucario, Mario, Luigi's, and Kirby's for their juggling capabilities. Lucario's also attacks both sides of him, making it a useful juggle and damage technique.
  • Zelda's up tilt can KO off the top blast line under 100%.
  • Dr. Mario's up tilt has a different trajectory based on where it hits.
  • Snake's up tilt is quite possibly the most feared up tilt in the game with its high knockback, fast start up, little cooldown time, and huge disjointed hitbox.
  • King Dedede's up tilt has more knockback than his uncharged up smash and has the second highest knockback of any up tilt, after Ganondorf.
  • Samus (in both Melee and Brawl) and Sonic have the only two up tilts in the entire series to meteor smash.
  • Kirby's up tilt is considered overall one of the best moves in any smash game, this move has incredibly good priority, very good combo ability, and has a gigantic disjointed hitbox.
