Articuno (フリーザー, Furīzā, Freezer in Japanese language versions) is a fictional creature in the Pokémon media franchise.

Creature description

Articuno is one of the three legendary birds, and its specific element is ice. It is a large bird that has enormous blue wings and a long tail. As described in the Pokédex, it has powers over ice, and its magnificent, seemingly translucent wings are said to be made of ice. As it flaps its wings in flight through the air, the moisture in the winter air is chilled, creating snowfall below. It can create blizzards by doing this. With its long tail trailing behind, its flying form is magnificent. It is said to appear to doomed people who are lost in icy mountains.

In Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen versions, Articuno appears at the Seafoam Islands. It is a ice and flying-type Pokémon, and is one of the three legendary birds. Its first appearance was in Pokémon Red and Blue versions.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee

As a Poké Ball Pokémon

Articuno is a legendary Pokémon that appears out of Poké Balls in Melee. Articuno's appearance is rare since it is a legendary Pokémon. Its chance of appearing out of a Poké Ball is doubled in the event match Legendary Pokémon. Articuno uses Blizzard as its attack, where it will unleash a blast of ice from its body. Any character that is in Blizzard's attack radius will take damage and be frozen for a few seconds, much like being affected by a Freezie. Characters that are affected by Articuno's Blizzard will also be sent towards the top of the screen; lighter characters will have a good chance of dying at low percentages from this attack. Articuno's attack does not harm the summoner.

As a trophy

Articuno features as a collectible trophy, unlocked as one of the 100+ trophies that can be collected randomly during normal play, such as in the Trophy Lottery and throughout the various Single-player Regular Matches. It reads as follows:

Articuno
Clouds gather, the barometer plunges, and fresh snow falls from the frigid air when this legendary Pokémon takes wing. Graceful and elegant, it boasts long tail feathers that flap in the wind and are lovely to behold. As would be expected, its combat moves are based on its cold nature; they include Ice Beam and Blizzard. (Pokémon Red & Blue 09/98)

Trivia
