Luminosity Makes Moves Miami 2025 was a Super Smash Bros. Melee superregional and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate major held in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida from October 10th-12th, 2025. It is the final event in the series to use the "Luminosity Makes Moves" title.
Tournament summary[edit]
Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit]
Despite having a solid top 10 player count, having 5 out of the 10 present on the SSBMRank Summer 2025 (discounting Zain, who opted to sandbag as Roy throughout the tournament), due to the event's far smaller size than its predecessor, alongside having fewer top 100 players in comparison, the event failed to attain major status, which has been reflected in sources such as Liquipedia.[1]
The tournament's less prestigious nature allowed for various mid and low-tiers to place comparatively higher than normal. The aforementioned Zain was able to place 13th with Roy, additionally eliminating North Carolina's best player, Zasa, to enter top 16, where he would face Ben, and was narrowly eliminated in a game 5 set to place 13th overall. Additionally, Joe(y) Bats and Mas Gato both placed 25th with Ness and Ganondorf, respectively, with Mas Gato additionally finding an upset over CPU0.
Much like Ultimate, there were very little upsets overall, and none of them had exceeded an upset factor of 2. The most notable upset was the 12th seed, JChu defeating 6th seed, Krudo, earning JChu his first ever top 10 win, and marking his first set won over Krudo, who had been defeated twice by Krudo at Central Florida Face-Off 2025.
Ultimately, the most notable aspect of the tournament would be with Hungrybox and moky's battle for the throne; the two would first meet in Winner's Finals, where, in a game 5 finish, Hungrybox would pull through to enter Grand Finals on Winner's side. moky would face Aklo, and once again, in a game 5 finish, moky would defeat Aklo for the runback with Hungrybox. moky would force a reset on Hungrybox, but Hungrybox would once again emerge victorious to win the tournament, totaling an astounding 15 game count with moky.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
This was the smallest iteration of the Miami series, with the singles entrants count falling short of 300. Contributing to the smaller size was the absence of several players who were sponsored by Luminosity Gaming, such as MkLeo and Maister, casting further doubts on the team's role in Smash for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, this event remained a major, in part due to many of North America's best players being in attendance, and despite several notable players dropping out beforehand.
Continuing his streak of excellent performances throughout the latter half of 2025, Toon would reach Winners Semis after beating Monte and #1 seed Syrup(upset factor 5), both in 3-1 fashion. While his run would immediately end at 5th after losing to eventual finalists Peabnut and Sonix, this would mark not only his first ever major top 8 but also the first ever major top 8 for a player from both South America and the entire southern hemisphere in Ultimate. This achievement combined with his other high major placements and superregional victories throughout the year would solidify him as the best South American player in the post-pandemic metagame.
With the exception of #4 seed ShinyMark who placed 9th, all of the top 8 seeds would go onto place top 8 at this tournament, though their paths all differed from what was initially projected. After being upset by Toon in Winners Quarters, Syrup defeated PkChris to enter top 8 through losers side where he would also defeat ApolloKage before falling to longtime Tri-state rival Zomba for 5th. #3 seed Sonix was similarly upset in Winners Quarters by MuteAce but would proceed to go on a 6-set losers run which included wins over Monte, Kola, Toon, Zomba, and MuteAce in the Losers Finals runback. This momentum would continue into Grand Finals where he was narrowly able to reset the bracket against Peabnut in a close game 5. However, Peabnut would retaliate in True Finals and came out on top with a 3-1 victory. This would mark not only Peabnut's first ever major win but also the first major win for a Mega Man player since Kameme's victory at 2GG: SwitchFest 2019 more than six years prior. This is also the third Luminosity Makes Moves Miami event in a row where Sonix ended his run at 2nd place, and marks a continuation of Sonix's "2nd place curse" at major tournaments, having extended his second streak of second place finishes to 3 majors in a row and 5 tournaments in a row.
Besides Toon over Syrup, only 3 other upsets had an upset factor of at least 4. LightningCam defeated Just Blue to eliminate him at 65th; ApolloKage defeated ShinyMark 3-0 in Winners Top 32 and went on to place 7th, being the only non top 8 seed to finish in the top 8 and marking his first major top 8 since Smash Ultimate Summit 6 over 2 years prior; and tied with Toon over Syrup as the largest upset of the tournament was #80 seed Epic_Gabriel's 3-0 victory over omega. Though it is worth noting that the tournament's preliminary seeding had Gabriel seeded within the top 32, so his significantly lower seed in the final draft may have been an oversight.
