Unown (アンノーン, Annōn, Unknown in original Japanese language versions) is a fictional swarming creature in the Pokémon media franchise.

Creature description

Unown is a bizarre, small entity that resembles a dark stylized letter of the alphabet with a large flat eye in its center. It comes in 28 confirmed variations, 26 of which are physically arranged to represent one of the 26 letters of the alphabet each and two more recently discovered variants resembling a question mark and exclamation mark respectively. According to the Pokédex, because this many different types of Unown exist, it is said they must have a variety of abilities. They are always found stuck on walls in ancient ruins, and their shapes look like the ancient writing and hieroglyphs present on ancient tablets. It is believed the two are somehow related, but it is a huge mystery whether the ancient writings or the various Unown came first; research into this topic is ongoing but nothing is known. At any rate, it seems that Unown communicate among each other telepathically. When one is alone, nothing happens. However, if there are two or more in the vicinity, an odd power is said to emerge.

Unown are pretty much never seen in competetive Pokémon battles, as the only move they can learn is the largely useless Hidden Power.

Only the first 26 different Unown forms are in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Since Melee's creation, a ! and a ? Unown were created, but since the game predates them, they do not appear.

As a Poké Ball Pokémon

The Unowns make their only appearance in Melee and appear out of Poké Balls. Unown's attack is Hidden Power, similar to Onix and Beedrill's attacks in Super Smash Bros. When Unown is summoned, a random letter of Unown flies off the screen. A group of Unowns will then begin flying from one side of the screen to the opposite side. Any character that makes contact with the swarm of Unowns will take damage. The character that made contact with the Unowns will also be forced to the top of the screen. The character even has a chance of dying at low percentages. Unown's attack does not harm the summoner. Unown's role is very similar to Beedrill's in Super Smash Bros.

As a trophy

All 26 varieties of Unown feature together as a collectible trophy, which is unlocked by amassing a combined total of over 16,503 feet with all the characters in the Home Run Contest. It reads as follows:

Unown:

These symbol pokémon resemble ancient hieroglyphics found on rocks, a resemblance that's said to be more than superficial. Quite a few different shapes of Unown have been confirmed, and it's believed that each type has unique abilities. These enigmatic pokémon can be found in the Ruins of Alph.

As a part of Kanto Skies: Poké Floats

In the stage Kanto Skies: Poké Floats, Unown fly past at moderately high speed.
