Flower Fairy Lip (花の妖精リップ, Flower Fairy Lip) is the main character of Panel de Pon, which was rebranded into Tetris Attack featuring Yoshi characters when the game was brought over Internationally. Before her appearance in Ultimate as an Assist Spirit in the Spirits mode of the game, she was referenced several times in the series starting in Melee as Kirby's Stone move and her signature weapon, the Flower Wand which is an item referred to in the series as Lip's Stick.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee

While Lip doesn't appear in this game, her signature Lip's Stick makes its debut as an item in the game; the Lip's Stick trophy would be the only time it would mention her in this game as subsequent installments of the Super Smash Bros. Series would go on to only describe the function of the item. The 2nd reference to her was in Kirby's Stone Move, which her Garbage Block is one of the possible designs he can turn into in this game. When a fan asked Sakurai if she was going to be in the game, he replied that he wondered how much people would know her but he personally thought that "Panel de Pon is a great piece of work." and recommended people to play the game if they don't know her.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Lip's Stick returns as an item, along with Kirby's Stone transformation as Lip's Garbage Block in Brawl. In the Pictochat Stage, Lip's Theme (Panel de Pon) was a new remix in Brawl. In non-Japanese versions of the game, Furil's sticker goes under the name "Fairy Flower Lip" from Nintendo Puzzle Collection, which is a similar but distinct looking character.

In Super Smash Bros. 4

Lip's Stick returns as an item, along with Kirby's Stone transformation as Lip's Garbage Block. Lip's Theme (Panel de Pon) only returns in the Wii U version of the game on the Wrecking Crew stage. In the customization menu, there are Lip's Stick equipment that lets you start a match with the item, unless you are playing Event matches.

Lip makes an appearance in the series for the first time in the Spirits mode of the game as an Assist Spirit. She is also the basis for a costume for Mii Swordfighters. Lip's Stick returns as an item, along with Kirby's Stone transformation as Lip's Garbage Block. The Brawl remix of Lip's Theme (Panel de Pon) also returns in this game, and the Flower effect was redesigned to match the title screen of Panel de Pon.

Origin

Lip originates from the Japanese puzzle game Panel de Pon, which was released overseas as Tetris Attack with its characters replaced by characters from Yoshi's Island. She is a flower fairy, and the protagonist of Panel de Pon. She appears on the title screen and in the background of puzzles. The reason Lip wields her magic wand in this game is because she isn't very good at making magic, which was also inferior to the other fairies' magic.

Trivia

• In some of the internal files that refers to Lip, they would be labelled as Rip most likely because of her Japanese pronunciation of her name Rippu, for example her signature weapon in the files of Brawl and SSB4 is called RipStick and the flower effect would be called RipStickFlower. In Captain Rainbow's files she would be referred to "Rip".
• Before she had a Mii Outfit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, her outfit, hair, boots and wand was also available for the Villager to wear in the Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome Amiibo update on November 2, 2016 but it does it in its own manner. All of the items relating to her in that game does not mention her but it goes under the "Fairy Flower" name.
  • In her Mii outfit, there was a blue belt around the waist of her outfit, however it is not present in the artwork they used for Lip's Spirit in Ultimate. This also applies to a couple of her official renders in Panel de Pon and the Fairy Flower dress in Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome Amiibo which lacks a blue belt.
  • Additionally, the same official render they used for her Spirit in Ultimate has a white part on the end of her sleeves. The Mii outfit lacks this part on the ends of her sleeves. The white part on the end of Lip's sleeves would also be missing in her some of her official artwork from Panel de Pon, and the sprites in the game due to the size of some sprites. The white part of the sleeves is visible in the Fairy Flower dress in Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome Amiibo. Its the same case for the white ends on the part of her skirt.
  • Similarly, in some of the official Panel de Pon artwork, her boots would lack the flower emblem, which is missing in her background sprite in the single mode gameplay modes. The flowers on her boots in the menu sprite in of game is present only on her right boot, while being absent in the official artwork render of her sitting on a flower. The flowers are in the Mii outfit and the Fairy Flower boots in Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome Amiibo.
• In Captain Rainbow, Lip has a Piranha Plant on her garden, which is a playable character in Ultimate via DLC.
• There was going to be 2nd game that was going to star Lip, which was Panel de Pon GB. It would have starred the fairy cast from the first game, but it was scrapped in favor of the Pokémon variant that was Pokémon Puzzle Challenge.
• After her debut game, she was relegated to Japan-only cameos. (Outside of the Super Smash Bros. Series) In Panel de Pon DS (and Chotto Panel de Pon), she cameos as an unlockable stage only in this version of the game, while the Puzzle League versions of the game such as Planet Puzzle League (and Puzzle League Express) makes the stage inaccessible without a cheating device.
  • Another non-Smash appearance of Lip was Captain Rainbow which also released only in Japan.
  • She also appears in BS Panel de Pon - Event '98 which features the fairy cast from the first game but her stage is skipped in the 1-player game with the first stage being Windy instead, which meant its technically a cameo for her in this game as she is not playable.
• Super Smash Bros. Ultimate marks Lip's first official appearance outside of Japan, discounting the Panel de Pon GB easter egg from Pokémon Puzzle Challenge (which was discovered 13 years later after the game's original release).
