Best of the West III: Climhazzard was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate superregional held in Nogales, Sonora, from April 5th-6th, 2025.
Tournament summary[edit]
Alongside many regulars to the Best of the West series, including Baja California players Sparg0, WaKa, and AlanDiss, the event featured several other notable players from outside Northwest Mexico, including MkLeo, SHADIC, Jahzz0, Ouch!?, and Monte. With the singles event reaching 218 entrants, Best of the West III became the largest event in the series up to that point, and was set to become the region's first A tier event on the LumiRank 2025 and their first A tier event since Delfino Maza 2023. Unfortunately, MkLeo eventually dropped out of the event to stay in San Francisco,[1] and though the tournament remained A tier thanks to Ouch!? and Monte's performances at Battle of BC 7 giving them higher player point values, Jahzz0 DQ'd from the event the day of, thereby dropping the event below the A tier threshold. Nevertheless, this event became the largest Smash tournament in Sonora and one of the largest Smash tournaments in Northwest Mexico.
Coming off a somewhat return-to-form performance at Battle of BC 7, #1 seed and previous Best of the West winner Sparg0 was unable to replicate that performance, as he was upset by #9 seed Cosmos 0-3 (upset factor 8) before falling to #19 seed Lemmon 1-3 (upset factor 9) for 9th. This was the first non-major/supermajor ranked event where Sparg0 placed outside the top 8 since he placed 25th at 2GG: Nightmare on Smashville over 5 years prior. In addition to Sparg0, #8 seed Moe ඞ failed to make top 8, instead falling in two minor upsets to #9 seed Cosmos 0-3 and #12 seed Beastly 2-3 for 17th. The final top 8 seed to miss top 8 was #4 seed and the first Best Of The West winner WaKa, who was knocked into Losers by #13 seed Chag 1-3 (upset factor 4) before losing to #2 seed SHADIC to place 9th. Other notable upsets include #53 seed Panda β defeating Beastly 3-0 (upset factor 5) and #7 seed AlanDiss defeating SHADIC 3-1 (upset factor 4).
Conversely, Cosmos and Chag both saw some of their best runs in a while. Following the Sparg0 upset, Cosmos was able to enter Grand Finals, albeit on the Losers side, after defeating Chag 3-0 and AlanDiss 3-2, only being double-eliminated by the eventual winner of the tournament, Ouch!?. Meanwhile, Chag defeated both Monte and SHADIC to place 4th, his best performance at a national-level event since Bonito Harbor a year prior. Finally, Ouch!? won the event rather easily, with only one match — his match against Lemmon — going to Game 5.
