Temple: Hermès Edition was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate major held in Villeneuve-d'Ascq, France, from September 1st-5th, 2021. With over 800 entrants, it was the second-largest Smash tournament in Europe at the time and the largest Smash tournament in France until COLOSSEL 2022. The tournament was initially set to take place from May 29th-30th, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic also led many international players, notably MkLeo, Maister, and Zackray, to drop out before the event began.[1][2]
Tournament summary[edit]
Despite the top player dropouts, the event still featured many of Europe's best players at that time: out of all the players who qualified or were replacements for the SWT: Europe Ultimate Regional Finals, only 5 qualified players (Bloom4Eva, Freetox_, Sillintor, iRefuse, and Lucretio) and 2 replacement players (Peli and Tru4) were not in attendance, though both Bloom4Eva and Peli were initially registered.
This event became known as Spanish player AndresFn's breakout event, who started the event as the 39th seed but ended his run at 5th. His run included a minor upset over Homika, then considered a top 10 player in Europe, as well as a notable upset over American player Tilde (upset factor 5). His biggest victory, however, was against Glutonny, the 2nd seed at the event; AndresFn defeated Glutonny 3-2 right before top 8 and became the first Spanish player to top 8 an Ultimate major. Similarly, this was the first major top 8 for both American player Charliedaking (his only major top 8 of his Ultimate career) and French rising star Raflow, both of whom ended the event at 7th.
Though knocked into Losers before top 8, Glutonny was still able to match his seed, knocking out Charliedaking, Kome, LeoN, and KEN in top 8 before meeting Tea in Grand Finals. Though the set went to game 5, Tea ultimately triumphed to win his first European major. With this win, Tea became the first player to achieve the Ultimate Triple Crown.
Outside of the top 8, Myollnir was able to place 9th using only Mii Swordfighter, defeating several strong European players along the way, including Oryon, Leon, Neeroz and Longo. This performance became the best Mii Swordfigher major performance in Ultimate, and to this day remains the only time a Mii Swordfighter player has placed this high at a major. Alongside Myollnir, Nitox achieved Lucas's best major placement in Ultimate at the time, though this placement has since been surpassed.
The event itself received several criticisms for its small venue and poor ventilation, leading several players to joke about both the crowd and the smell at the venue.[3][4] In addition, the doubles event was cancelled half-way through the bracket in order to save time. Finally, the entire bracket on Start.gg disappeared in 2025, though archives remain on other sites and on the Internet Archive.
