Ness returns as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4. Ness was officially confirmed on October 3rd, 2014, but was leaked beforehand on September 11th by a leaker's Twitch stream. His profile art matches a previous leak.

His appearance is different from his other Smash Bros. appearances, Being overall thinner, especially in the face, and the colors of all of his clothing items being much more brightly colored, like in his original game. The brighter colors also go with the rest of the characters' new looks, being overall brighter. His face is also missing the slight pink blushes on his face in past games. His head is also smaller and more proportional. His shirt is missing a yellow stripe at the bottom that has been present in all prior games Ness has appeared, although it was also missing in Melee's opening animation.

As in every previous Smash installation, Ness is voiced by Makiko Omoto, who recorded new voice clips for the game. He has a more American accent when compared to previous installments, such as how he pronounces his PK moves.

How to unlock

The player then has to fight Ness on Magicant, where victory results in both Ness and the stage.

Changes from Brawl

Ness has been greatly buffed from Brawl, most notably with his almost unique (shared with Lucas) and detrimental extended grab release animation removed.

  • Buff Ness has overall faster speed.
  • Buff PK Thunder travels slightly faster, and has a larger hitbox.
  • Buff Forward tilt has been sped up.
  • Buff Dash attack is stronger.
  • Buff Neutral air deals more damage.
  • Buff PK Flash seems to travel slightly faster.
  • Buff PSI Magnet has less ending lag.
  • Buff PK Fire travels much farther.
  • Buff The extra 10 frame grab release animation has been removed.
  • Buff Up throw has strengthened to the point where it can KO reliably.
  • Buff Down aerial is much faster, now almost as fast as its Smash 64 iteration.
    • Nerf It has much less base knockback.
    • Change Ness spins before attacking.
  • Buff PK Thunder 2 has much greater knockback and is slightly faster.
  • Buff Ness no longer enters into his helpless state when bumping into a wall with PK Thunder 2, though this can only be done once.
  • Nerf Can no longer absorb Megavitamins with PSI Magnet.
  • Nerf Forward smash is slightly slower.
  • Nerf Forward air is less damaging and has a smaller hitbox.
  • Nerf PK Starstorm has a much smaller horizontal range, leaving blind spots.
    • Buff The stars are more concentrated, however.
    • Change The Final Smash can be angled left or right to catch any opponents, similar to Aura Storm.
  • Change Dash attack has more intense lighting effects.
  • Change PK Thunder appears to be a brighter shade of blue.
  • Change PSI Magnet also is a light blue color.
  • Change PK Flash is a much darker green.
  • Change PK Fire's effect after hitting an opponent produces darker colored flames, and produces more smoke.
  • Change Up tilt changed to his Smash 64 animation.
  • Change Up Smash and Down Smash now charge with Ness holding the Yoyo rather than having the Yoyo on the ground.
    • Buff Because of this, the moves get stronger as they charge and Ness can now use his smashes while standing on a ledge.
    • Nerf However this also means the yoyo can no longer damage opponents before the smash attacks are performed.

The following moves appear unchanged:

Special Move Basic Custom 1 Custom 2
Neutral Special PK Flash Rising PK Flash PK Freeze
Side Special PK Fire PK Bonfire Flying PK Fire
Up Special PK Thunder Lasting PK Thunder Big PK Thunder
Down Special PSI Magnet Attraction PSI Attack Frontal PK Magnet
