Coins are used in Brawl's Coin Launcher or in Melee's Lottery to win Trophies, and can also be used for Continues and Spectator Mode. They are gained simply by playing various game modes, like Vs Mode. However, All-Star Mode, Classic Mode, and Adventure Modes give out more, about 70 at a time. Vs Mode gives about 10 per battle. During the coin launcher, it is also possible to earn between 10-20 coins by shooting the metal targets down.

The largest number of coins you can have at one time is 999 in Super Smash Bros. Melee and in Super Smash Bros. Brawl is 9999. Spending them before that point is thus generally a good idea. The ending mini-game on Classic mode garners more coins for every target hit, and also gives out more coins per hit if playing on a higher difficulty.
Coins can be gained by a variety of ways; the most common is to merely play through the VS. and Single Player modes, as each battle gives the player some coins. In both cases, the shortest the match lasts, the higher the damage inflicted, and the more attacks they have landed on opponents.
