Well, we know the entire roster for Smash 4, so predictions for that are pointless- and it's never too early, right? :P

You can make edits to your prediction until the first Smash 5 character is confirmed (which may be a very long time, obviously). This should help pass the time though!

You can mostly use anything- a table, an image, or even just a dotted list. If you choose to use an image, make it a clear image so that it's easy to tell which character is which, and also include the names of each character somewhere on the roster.

Make a header with your username when you add your prediction, and... well, have fun! :P

Rules

There can be no more than 80 characters on your roster.
- If you wish to bring back transformations, they only count as one character.
Characters must be featured mainly in video games. This does not mean video games based off of TV or movies, rather TV or movies based off of video games. (So Ash Ketchum would be acceptable, but Mickey Mouse would not.)
No more than 10 veterans may be cut.
- Mewtwo, Ice Climbers, Lucas, Wolf, Roy, etc. do not count against this.
Be creative and have fun!

Scoring System

Correct Newcomer Prediction - 10 points. A correct newcomer prediction is when a newcomer on your prediction roster is confirmed to be in the game. Pretty straightforward.
Correct Veteran Prediction - 5 points. Like the above, but with veterans. Since it's pretty easy to predict this (I'm pretty sure Mario will return), it doesn't have as high a score as a correct newcomer prediction.
Semi-Correct Prediction - 3 points. This is when you predict a transformation character or a team character, but only one of them appear. (i.e. you predict Zelda/Sheik, but only Sheik is confirmed). You get the three points for each character (meaning if you predict Pokemon Trainer with Greninja, Chespin, and Braixen and they all appear separately, you get 9 points.) However, there is no penalty if only part of the character is confirmed (only Greninja appears, not Chespin and Braixen), you just only get 3 points. This same rule applies to if you predict two characters separately but they are confirmed as transformations or a team, even if you only guessed one of the characters. If you predict a team character and only one of them appears with the other as a costume (like Popo with Nana as a costume instead of Popo & Nana as the Ice Climbers), you do not get 6 points, only 3. If you guess a character as a costume but they are confirmed as a separate character (i.e. Daisy as a Peach costume), you do not get any bonus points and are charged with a missing prediction.
Incorrect Prediction - Minus 5 points. This is when a character on your roster is confirmed to not be in the game. Like how Chrom was highly speculated in Smash 4 but was confirmed to not be playable in the Lucina/Robin reveal trailer. Or how Ashley was confirmed to be an Assist Trophy. Those characters would have gotten you 5 points removed.
Missing Prediction - Minus 3 points. This is when a character is confirmed that wasn't on your roster (like how no one could've guessed Wii Fit Trainer (yet oddly everyone predicted Duck Hunt)). Since Sakurai often picks characters no one expected (Ice Climbers, R.O.B., WFT), it's reasonable for this to be slightly less of a deduction than the incorrect prediction.

When SSB5 is released and all of the characters are confirmed, everyone's score will be added up and the winner will win... um, something. I'll decide that later. And if I win... well, I can't really give myself a prize, so that just means everyone loses I guess. Sigh.

Note that this competition is only for characters. Predictions on stages, alternate costumes, items, etc. are not considered part of the official competition, and therefore do not apply to your score.

Welp, here we go! Now for some explanations because I'm bored.

~~I did not add any Mario characters because, despite being the biggest and the mascot Nintendo series, they are way over-represented, with seven characters.~~ EDIT: Added ~~Paper Mario~~ as a new Mario representative. EDIT: Replaced Paper Mario with Captain Toad.
- ~~The DK, Yoshi, and Wario universes did not get any extra representatives because they are only barely separate from the Mario universe.~~ EDIT: Added Dixie Kong as a newcomer~~, kinda serves as a newcomer for all four~~. EDIT: Also added ~~Kamek~~ as a ~~villain~~ representative for Yoshi. ~~Besides Baby Mario & Baby Luigi (who I've considered as a tag-team), Kamek is the most important non-Yoshi in the series.~~ EDIT: Replaced Kamek with the Baby Bros.
I brought back the Ice Climbers because Sakurai cut them just because of them breaking the 3DS version. Since he likes his random characters, he'd probably bring them back once he's able to.
I added Inkling because I think Splatoon! will be a pretty popular game, and its characters are really cool. I actually have an ink system worked out for him, but I won't go into to much detail.
~~Yuga joins the Zelda series, mostly to even it out with the Mario and Pokemon games a little. EDIT: Replaced Yuga with Midna, a much more popular and highly requested character.~~ EDIT: Replaced Midna with Skull Kid, another popular and highly-requested character who is also a villain, which would be nice to have. ...I really hate Ghirahim, btw. EDIT: Added Tingle. Mario got two non-clone newcomers in Smash 4, so it's not unreasonable. Plus, while Mario/Pokemon/Zelda have always been around equal in representation, Zelda is falling behind now... two newcomers brings them back to equal. EDIT: Removed Tingle, since Ravio fills the extra Zelda slot (I forgot about him earlier). EDIT: Added Impa in addition to Skull Kid.
Krystal is added due to the fact that, alongside random characters, Sakurai also likes adding requested characters. Like King Dedede in Brawl and Mega Man in Smash 4. Also, she's a nice unique face for the Star Fox series, and would use her staff.
I added Ridley too, because of the same reason as Krystal (and because I really wanted the roster to be even). I've seen images of him in Brawl at the same size as Bowser and Charizard, and it wasn't entirely ridiculous. Although I still doubt he'll get in, he would make an okay addition. EDIT: Removed Ridley. EDIT: Added Dark Samus as a replacement Metroid villain.
Balloon Fighter joins as a new retro and random representative (heh heh, alliteration)
Dillon because he was highly-requested and for an eShop representative.
Waddle Dee because I think Sakurai will favor the Kirby series a little, since he favored the Kid Icarus in Smash 4. EDIT: Also added Prince Fluff, since besides Kirby, all of the current representatives are villains. EDIT: Removed Prince Fluff.
Chorus Kids for a second random character (we had both WFT and Duck Hunt, right?) EDIT: Cut Chorus Kids. Actually, I think most attempts at a random character will probably end it failure. I think getting the 3 point deduction would be better xD EDIT: Brought them back. EDIT: Cut them. Again.
Mewtwo returns for Pokemon~~- however, he's likely going to be replaced by a Gen VII newcomer once I have an idea of who they are. Maybe even Gen VIII.~~ EDIT: Due to Mewtwo being confirmed for DLC in SSB4, I think he's likely to return in SSB5 as non-DLC. ~~As such, Greninja will now be replaced by a Gen VII/VIII Pokemon.~~ EDIT: Added an extra spot specifically for a Pokemon newcomer, and all other characters will stick around.
~~Mallo is another eShop representative. And possibly a random character. In my opinion, he deserves it, but I'm sure someone disagrees.~~ EDIT: Due to lack of a moveset, cut Mallo.
Dr. Mario, Dark Pit, and Lucina return. Try as I might I couldn't come up with a fourth clone (which is why I added Ridley). I considered Jolteon, Blood Falcon, and Dark Link, but none of them seemed like they would make the cut. But, I think Sakurai will keep clones in. Personally, I like them. EDIT: Eventually decided on Ravio as a Link clone. He would fight using a wooden sword, which isn't as strong as Link's, but some of his moves have different effects- for example, his up special could use the Fire, Ice, and Sand Rods (switching through in that order), with the Fire having a fiery effect and having slightly more range, the Ice freezing opponents at high damages, and the Sand doing the most damage with no side effects. EDIT: Alongside updating Ravio's image~~, I removed Dark Pit because he wasn't accepted very well, while Dr. Mario and Lucina were (except for the people who just all-out hate clones)~~. EDIT: Due to Sakurai's obsession with Kid Icarus, I brought back Dark Pit. EDIT: Added Blood Falcon as a fifth clone, because I needed another slot. EDIT: Removed Blood Falcon. EDIT: Brought back Blood Falcon and removed Ravio.
Bomberman joins as a new third-party representative. He seemed like he fit the best, although he only beat out Maxwell and Professor Layton because he was the only one with 3D artwork (and I'm a stickler about things matching). EDIT: Due to Rayman's feature as a trophy, I think it's likely that he'll be a third party, not Bomberman. Still want Layton and Maxwell though :(
EDIT: Added Viridi as a Kid Icarus newcomer, since she and Hades seem to be the most requested, and also because Sakurai is obsessed with KI and will probably add someone new.
EDIT: Added the Pikmin Captains as a Pikmin newcomer. It's kinda a tag-team with Alph and Brittany/Alph and Charlie/Brittany and Charlie (with costumes switching them out). Semi-clone of Olimar, with the second captain acting like a Luma, to an extent. EDIT: Removed Pikmin Captains.
EDIT: Added a Fire Emblem spot for a character from the next game. We've always gotten a character from a recent game. So I'm sure the pattern will keep up.
EDIT: Added Isaac from Golden Sun. ...Mostly because there aren't any non-retro universes without representatives except Golden Sun, Starfy, and Rhythm Heaven.
EDIT: Added Takamaru, since he's no longer Japan-exclusive.
EDIT: Added Chibi-Robo. Now I have three new non-retro universes without previous representation! EDIT: Cut Chibi-Robo.
EDIT: Added Tempo as another eShop representative. He's better than Mallo, but only barely. EDIT: Removed Tempo.
EDIT: Added the currently unnamed protagonist of Xenoblade X as a secondary Xenoblade representative. I think he/she'll be somewhat like Lucas, and would probably get cut in Smash 6 (if there are going to be more than five games :P), but would have several similarities to Shulk... except I don't think the Monado is returning... I dunno. Either way, I think this character will appear, whoever they are. Maybe even as a Shulk replacement...
EDIT: Added Spinax (the starter dino from the original Fossil Fighters). I considered Fossil Fighters earlier before deciding against it because the last game was several years ago, but with Frontier being confirmed at the recent Direct, I think that it's a likely character.
EDIT: The Super Smash Bros. logo is a character from Codename: STEAM. Since we don't know much about characters I don't know which one could be considered the most important, besides Lincoln who doesn't seem to fight. But I think a STEAM character is likely. EDIT: Added Henry Fleming as the STEAM representative. I have a full steam system worked out for him kind of like Inkling :P Since he's the only STEAM representative and there are several different characters with weapons that would be nice to see, I think his moveset would be taken from other characters too. But Overwatch as a counter move is a definite :P
EDIT: A list of cut veterans: Duck Hunt ~~and R.O.B.~~. I cut Duck Hunt because I needed an extra spot for Dixie Kong, and Duck Hunt was probably the dumbest character in the game (although I'm pretty good at him). ~~I didn't actually mean to cut ROB, but he's a very random character and I have quite a few on the roster already, so cutting two of the random veterans wasn't an entirely bad thing.~~ EDIT: Added back ROB, since he's been in two games and last time that happened it made lots of people upset, including people who thought they were ridiculous randoms. ~~As mentioned above, Greninja will also likely be cut to be replaced by a Generation VII or Generation VIII newcomer.~~ EDIT: Cut Wii Fit Trainer. She and Duck Hunt seemed to be the most likely to be cut.

Yeah, obviously it's waaaaay too early to predict the roster for Smash 5, considering that the game probably will not be released before 2020 at the very least, we can expect a character reveal for... 2019 maybe? At this point it's pretty much impossible to make a convincing and plausible SSB5 roster without putting a lot of filler slots like "Gen VIII Pokémon", "New Starfox character", "Code Name S.T.E.A.M. rep", "Future series rep", etc. and we couldn't imagine a moveset for them anyway. Also look at the SSB4 newcomers, besides Duck Hunt and third-parties, they all have notable post-Brawl appearances.

For all those reasons, I'm not going to post a complete roster; instead I'll post an incomplete one, then I'll add more when new Nintendo games with standing out characters release.

Veterans reflection

Most of the characters in Smash 4 have strong staying power IMO, but a few ones could be axed if the next director thinks that they're not worth the hard work to put them into the game.

Rosalina is a cool addition, but I fear that she eventually becomes generic spinoff filler like Daisy and Waluigi. If she becomes a recurring character in future main Mario titles or even appears in some RPGs she becomes 100 % safe though. But overall I trust her staying power, the worst I realistically imagine for her is being demoted to unlockable.
Ike is one of the most notable lords from Fire Emblem, appearing in two titles, being the only lord in the series to not be of royal blood, and also being very popular, but he's not likely to return outside of spin-offs (SMTxFE) or like he did in Awakening as a spirit from the past (like a very high number of past FE characters did), and his "mercenary with a heavy sword" niche kinda overlaps with Shulk, who as the ambassador of the Xenoblade series is pretty safe IMO. His best chance to keep post-SSB4 relevancy is a Radiance games remake, which is something I'd LOVE to see come to real. Like Rosalina, I mostly imagine him demoted to unlockable.
Greninja was an extremely surprising addition to the roster, and arguably the most random character choice ever in the Smash history. Even Sakurai admited it himself, he choosed it for the sake of having a gen VI Pokémon character and because it was his favourite Pokémon from this new gen. I'm worried about Greninja's staying power; while Lucario stood the test of time, proving itself as pretty much the second mascot of the series while losing only to Pikachu, I'm dubtful about Greninja keeping its reputation as one of the most popular Pokémon and becoming a staple of the series. It's the only one I'm reasonably expecting to be cut, asides from maybe clones, and third-parties to a lesser extent. However, I hope that we won't get a Pokémon newcomer in SSB5, unless it's one who REALLY stands out and has staying power as a popular mascot.
I have no clue about the clone trinity.
Third-party characters are an important appeal for new Smash games, and we can reasonably expect at least one third-party newcomer for Smash 4, but it would be a shame to cut any third-party character currently in Smash to add others: Sonic is one of the most well-known gaming characters with a strong history behind him as Mario's previous rival, Mega Man has a great gaming legacy related to Nintendo as well as being pretty much the single gaming character the most adaptable to the Smash format, and Pac-Man is just too much of a gaming icon. If any of these is cut for anyone else, the next director is going to be heavily backlashed. The only thing I imagine against them are potential copyright issues, but overall I expect them to return.

For veterans not playable in Smash 4, I'm not really expecting most of them to return. Young Link, Pichu, Roy and Lucas have next to no shot IMO, being too much of derivatives of other fighters and overall weak as Nintendo characters. Squirtle and Ivysaur were unique but are too weak as Nintendo characters as well. Ice Climbers were causing technical difficulties for the 3DS version (and even possibly Wii U's 8-player Smash) and were outright cut without trying too much to make them possible to handle due to their series being very weak at representing Nintendo, their gaming legacy being behind and not even close to G&W, Duck Hunt and R.O.B. The only way I'm imagining them returning is if they get a new game like how Sakurai revived Kid Icarus. Wolf is a derivative of the other Starfox characters, but I could see him returning due to Starfox getting a revival for the next year, likely with a overhauled moveset inspired from source material from the future game(s?). Snake didn't return back for both being less famous than the other third-parties in Smash and for being more of a Playstation character than a Nintendo one at this point; Sakurai himself admited that he didn't plan to make him playable again from the start. For now I'll assume that none of them will return in Smash 5.

tl;dr The only veterans I'm reasonably expecting to be cut are Greninja and members of the clone trinity, but even then I want to see if Greninja stands the test of time and doesn't become just a "flavour of the month", and I really have no clue about the clones, they could go either way?

Newcomers reflection

I'm going to add newcomers only if they are accurate and specific characters (and not filler slots like "Character from [insert name here] series"), if I have an accurate idea of how they could work as playable characters, and what they could represent from their series or for Nintendo as a whole.

Captain Toad is the new rising star of the Mario universe and is IMO by far the best way to add a playable Toad in Smash. The Toad species itself always felt like an iconic filler for me, but I don't feel this for Captain Toad, as he's a character with definite role and interests, and he has great uniqueness potential with source material from his game and a weight-changing mechanic involving his backpack (like throwing items from it, but they eventually regenerate). And for the "He can't jump" argument, just either make a platform appearing under his feet to allow him to jump, or just flat-out ignore it, I don't see it as much as a big deal as Ridley's proportions. I see him as the most likely Smash 5 newcomer right now.

I could see Inkling from Splatoon as well, but I want to see if the series becomes particularly notable, because otherwise it could end up as how Golden Sun and Dillon's Rolling Western were treated in Brawl and Smash 4 respectively. At this point it seems that the series has actual potential to end up ad the next Pikmin or Xenoblade, and there's definitely enough source material to make Inkling unique as a fighter in Smash.
