Yoshi has been confirmed to return as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. 4, revealed during the April 8th, 2014 Super Smash Bros. Direct. Like Bowser, Yoshi now stands up straighter after having stood hunched over like a dinosaur in the previous Smash games. Yoshi also looks significantly more cartoony and somewhat re-proportioned, more closely resembling his recent appearances in the Mario and Yoshi games.

Differences from previous games

  • Buff Back aerial now has a more accentuated final hit.
  • Buff Down aerial's final blow now hits grounded opponents horizontally, which should make the move safer to use on grounded opponents. The animation is also significantly faster.
  • Buff Yoshi's tail appears to grow larger for his tail based attacks, apparently increasing their reach.
  • Buff Yoshi is now able to jump out of shield, like in Smash 64. [1]
  • Buff Egg Throw now has a small rainbow trail added when Yoshi throws the egg and they travel faster.
  • Change Yoshi has a new dash attack. He performs a dashing kick, similar to Fox's dash attack, while then tumbling over.
  • Change Yoshi has a new up smash. He performs a quick backflip kick, similar to Fox's up smash.
  • Change The egg formed with Yoshi's shield and Egg Roll now matches his selected color.

The following moves appear visually unchanged:

Special Moves

In Super Smash Bros. 4, special moves can be swapped out for different variants, but Yoshi's have yet to be seen in action. Yoshi retains all of his original special moves and his final smash. These are Yoshi's special moves:
