gamescom LAN x CGN Open was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate superregional held in Cologne, Germany from February 21st-23rd, 2025.
Tournament summary[edit]
This event featured a multitude of out-of-country talent, including Sparg0 and MKBigBoss from Mexico; many of France's best players including Glutonny, crêpe salée, and Raflow; and Supahsemmie from the Netherlands. In addition, the event featured almost all of Germany's best players, including Tarik, quiK, and drybie. As such, this event became Germany's first A tier event, and Germany became the third European country to hold one in the post-pandemic metagame. Conversely, the event only featured two players ranked in the top 50 on the LumiRank 2024.2, Sparg0 and Glutonny. As such, this event is not considered a major on SmashWiki.
This event featured the greatest run of Supahsemmie's career up to that point. He first entered top 8 Winners side with an upset over the number one seed Sparg0, defeating him 3-1. In top 8, he notably double-eliminated MKBigBoss 3-1 and 3-0, but unfortunately was double-eliminated himself by crêpe salée 0-3 in both sets to place 2nd. Nevertheless, this was considered the best Young Link performance at an A tier event in the post-pandemic metagame, outplacing Toast's placement at CEO 2022. On the other hand, after losing to Supahsemmie, Sparg0 was able to defeat Germany's best two players quiK and Tarik 3-1 and 3-0, respectively, knocking out Germany from the top 6 of their own event. Sparg0 then defeated Glutonny in a 3-2, but then lost to MKBigBoss 1-3 to place 4th, notably going down 0-2 while using Aegis. This upset was surprising, as Sparg0 had a 4-0 record over MKBigBoss, with their last 2 sets even being blowouts for Sparg0.
This event was ultimately won by crêpe salée, marking his second A tier victory.
