Forward B is a special attack introduced in Melee. It is performed by pressing the B button while holding "left" or "right" on the control stick. Because the attacks are the same in both directions, the Forward B is also commonly called side B, and the official term is smash B. Some forward B attacks are different depending on whether or not the control stick is "smashed" or simply tilted to the side. An example would be Samus' missiles, where a tilt B yields a weaker homing missile, and a smash B yields a stronger, faster missile.
