Item class Throwing/trapping

The Pitfall (おとしあなのタネ, otoshiana no tane, lit:Pitfall seed) is an item that appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It hails from the Animal Crossing series. When thrown, the Pitfall bounces off walls until it touches the ground, which it then embeds itself into with no trace, but will disappear after a few minutes. Unless the opponent is invincible, the next enemy to walk onto its location gets driven into the ground and will take some damage; this causes them to be buried if on a hard platform, though if they are on a pass-through platform they will go clean through it and continue downwards. This also happens when the item is thrown at a grounded enemy. This can be used to score easy KOs on custom stages made by the Stage Builder that have pass-through platforms as their base. When thrown at an airborne enemy, the target is Meteor Smashed. Buried Pitfalls disappear with a puff of smoke after a long time, if no one goes onto it.

Origin

Pitfall's made their first appearance in Animal Crossing and later appeared in Animal Crossing: Wild World. In both Animal Crossing and Wild World, Pitfalls are somewhat rare items that can be found around town. Pitfall's are used to pull "pranks" on other townsfolk by burying it and waiting for the animal to walk by. when the animal walks over it, he or she falls and get's temporarily stuck in that spot. The player could also fall into his or her own Pitfall. In Brawl, the Pitfall can be picked up and thrown at either an opponent or at the ground. If the player throws it at an opponent, the person becomes stuck temporarily and is unable to move. When a Pitfall is thrown at the ground, a person can become stuck by moving over it.

Trophy

The Pitfall item appears as a trophy in Super Smash Bros Brawl. It is obtained by completing 100 Man Brawl with any character.

Trophy Description

A tricky little item you can bury. Any player who passes over it will drop into a hole. If you land in a pitfall, move the Control Stick quickly back and forth to escape, because until you do, you're completely defenseless. In Animal Crossing, this item also dropped passersby into holes. It was a thrill to bury one and wait for a visiting pal to stumble across it.

Trivia

If Wario strikes a buried Pitfall while riding on his Wario Bike, he will be sent flying for an instant KO. This can be avoided by wheelying and taunting.
