List of Super Smash Bros. Brawl trailers
This is a list of trailers meant to advertise Super Smash Bros. Brawl. With the exception of the trailer shown at Nintendo World 2006, these trailers are included in the game itself. As the introduction cutscene was shown at several events, it can technically be considered a trailer, but it is not included here.
E3 2006 Trailer[edit]
This is the first trailer for the game, which debuted on May 11, 2006 during the E3 After-Hours Press Conference. It was created using a mixture of pre-rendered footage and in-engine gameplay, as the game's development was still very early.
The trailer begins with Mario, Link, Kirby, and Pikachu, all in their Super Smash Bros. Melee models, running towards each other in a black void. Once they all meet, they transition to their new Brawl models as the new Battlefield materializes around them. After a title drop, several shots of in-engine gameplay featuring these four characters on Battlefield and the then-unannounced Castle Siege, as well as a brief reveal of the Nintendog assist trophy.
The trailer is mostly pre-rendered from this point forward, beginning with a shot of Mario grabbing a Smash Ball and performing his Final Smash, with Link and Kirby performing theirs in the same pre-rendered fashion. The trailer then transitions to reveal Halberd; its hangar opens to the shock of all combatants, and Meta Knight reveals himself. In a brief gameplay cutaway, Meta Knight attacks the four combatants on the stage. A Light Arrow shoots at Meta Knight from off-screen, but he turns invisible to block it and retreats. Pit appears in his new design, launching another light arrow, but Meta Knight dodges it and rushes Pit. In response, Pit bisects his bow into dual blades, beginning another brief gameplay cut of the two fighting. Samus suddenly appears and lines up her own Final Smash against the two, but they narrowly dodge. Samus, partially obscured by the dust and debris, sheds her armor, becoming Zero Suit Samus. Before she can engage the opponents, a motorcycle approaches them, revealing Wario as the rider. Wario loses control of the motorcycle and spins out, nearly hitting Pit and Samus and crashing into a rock. All the other combatants look on in confusion as Wario awkwardly picks himself up. Suddenly, Wario's belly begins to expand. The other combatants gasp in horror as Wario unleashes a massive fart, the shockwave felt from far away.
After another title drop, a codec call suddenly appears on-screen. Colonel Roy Campbell and Snake appear and have a conversation, speaking subtitled Japanese. Colonel frantically tells Snake that he has big news, to which Snake groans at the thought of another mission. Colonel then asks Snake if he is familiar with Super Smash Bros., to which Snake responds by describing it as "That Nintendo thing" in a confused tone. Colonel continues by claiming he received an invitation to join the game, asking if Snake accepts. Snake takes a long pause, prompting the Colonel to ask where he is. The camera then wipes to Snake already on Battlefield, hiding in a box. Snake claims he is doing reconnaissance, as knowing the enemy is the quickest path to victory. Snake throws away the box to reveal himself to the combatants, shouting his iconic phrase "It's showtime." The trailer ends on a "coming soon" tagline.
Trivia[edit]
- The order the newcomers were revealed in this trailer is the basis for their official ordering within the series; from this point forward, fighter numbers were counted up from here in chronological reveal order.
Nintendo World Video[edit]
This trailer was showcased at Nintendo World, a traveling live event, during 2006. The event was held in the city of Nagoya on November 2nd, Osaka on November 12th, and Tokyo on November 25th and 26th. This event was the first time in Japan the Wii was made playable to the public, though Brawl itself was not.
This trailer revealed the return of Fox and several new stages: Mario Circuit, Yoshi's Island, Skyworld, Pokémon Stadium 2, Shadow Moses Island, and Lylat Cruise. It primarily comprises in-game footage showing the characters and stages in-action, with greater depth than at E3.
Each character is given a unique splash screen, spotlighted in this order: Mario, Pikachu, Kirby, Link, Wario, Meta Knight, Pit, Zero Suit Samus, Snake, and Fox. Pit and Snake's splash screens use their early renders from E3 2006, while Fox's Blaster is permanently in-hand.
This trailer uses a unique arrangement of the Super Smash Bros. Brawl Main Theme which is absent from the final game, but appears to be an early version of "Menu 1".
15 Second Movie Presentation[edit]
A very brief, 15-second teaser was shown for the game at Nintendo's E3 2007 press conference. Donkey Kong, who had not yet been officially revealed, was visible during the segment with Pikachu's Volt Tackle, confirming his return for the game. At E3, this teaser was shortly followed by Reggie Fils-Aimé's announcement of the game's then-planned North American release date - December 3, 2007.
Snake Trailer[edit]
The trailer starts with the colonel and Snake talking about Mario, the conversation being the actual codec conversation in-game. The trailer then shifts primarily to in-game footage, showing off Snake's moveset and interactions with other characters via brief vignettes. This trailer notably reveals Bowser in motion, as well as the stages Rumble Falls, Delphino Plaza, and Smashville, and the items Home-run Bat and Mr. Saturn.
Fall 2007 Trailer[edit]
This trailer was unveiled at Nintendo's Fall 2007 press conference on October 10, 2007. This trailer primarily showed in-game footage, as well as a few snippets of The Subspace Emissary. Most of the content seen in this trailer had already been profiled on the Smash Bros. DOJO!!, but they were presented in video for the first time.
This trailer notably shows Peach, Ice Climbers, Lucas, Ike, Pokémon Trainer, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and Zelda in action, and the Final Smashes Land Master and Super Dragon. Item-wise, the trailer showcased the assist trophies Andross, Lakitu & Spinies, Lyn, and Mr. Resetti, as well as the Poké Ball Pokémon Kyogre, Torchic, Piplup, and Snorlax. The trailer also showed off stickers and trophies, as well as a brief display of the Diorama mode.
This trailer ended with the text "COMING SOON" in place of a 2007 release window, as it was shortly followed by the announcement of the game's delay to early 2008.
Sonic Reveal Trailer[edit]
This trailer shortly followed the above during the fall conference, and was released on the Smash Bros. DOJO!! the same day. The trailer starts in The Jungle with the noises of running in the distance. Mario is seen attacking some Goombas when an obscured figure sprints past him, causing him to fall over. This sprinting character is revealed to be Sonic. The trailer then cuts to gameplay showing off Sonic's moveset while the song Live & Learn plays in the background. This trailer notably reveals the Warp Star and more adventure mode stages. The trailer ends on a shot of Super Sonic, though it being Sonic's Final Smash is left ambiguous.
