The Evolution Championship Series 2015, or simply EVO 2015, was a fighting game tournament held in Las Vegas, Nevada, which took place on July 17th to 19th, 2015 at the Bally's Las Vegas / Paris Las Vegas Casino. Notably, EVO 2015 included two Smash games, with the return of Super Smash Bros. Melee alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, after continued interest in the game was noted by the staff following EVO 2014.[1]

EVO 2015 allowed custom special moves in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U by utilizing the Official Custom Moveset Project, while several of the game's DLC characters, Lucas, Roy, and Ryu, were not allowed due to how soon before the tournament they became available[2].

On July 1st, 2015, Joey Cuellar, EVO's tournament director, revealed the final registration numbers for this year's tournament, confirming EVO 2015 as the largest Smash tournament to date, with 1,926 entrants for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 1,869 for Super Smash Bros. Melee[3], breaking the previous record for both games set by Apex 2015. Contrary to popular belief that a large number of players would be entering both games, Cuellar confirmed on Twitter that of the 3,280 unique Smash players, only 516 entered both games, amounting for a 16% overlap.[4]

Coming from a notable amount of national tournament victories and positive records against all of the top 6 players except PPMD throughout the year, Armada won the Melee tournament without dropping a set, defeating PPMD in winners finals and Hungrybox twice in winners semis and grand finals using Fox, after sticking with Peach during the entire tournament until top 8. Hungrybox took 2nd place, taking out three of said top 6 players in a series of upsets: Leffen in winners quarters, Mango in losers quarters and PPMD in losers finals. Being his first tournament attendance since Apex 2015, PPMD managed to secure a 3rd place after winning close sets against SFAT and HugS in the semifinals bracket, but eventually being double eliminated by Armada and Hungrybox respectively. Plup, using Sheik as of his character switch from Samus since the beginning of the year, achieved an impressive 4th place after defeating Mango in winners quarters and Leffen in losers quarters, playing Samus exclusively for the latter. Despite winning three national tournaments featuring some of The Five Gods in a row right before EVO (CEO 2015, FC Smash 15XR: Return and WTFox), Leffen ended the tournament in 5th place after losing to Hungrybox and Plup. ChuDat, after being dismissed from Mortality eSports following their retirement from fighting games, and crowd-funded by Melee Hell to be able to participate, secured a spot in top 8 by making a long run through losers bracket, eliminating Laudandus, Silent Wolf, Westballz and HugS, the last one also being one of the most old-school players to achieve a very high placing. The old school "King of Smash" Ken also notably placed 13th, with this being his highest placement at a national tournament since September 2007.

ZeRo won the Smash Wii U tournament dominantly, defeating Ally in winners quarters, Abadango in winners semis, Nairo in winners finals and Mr. R in grand finals without losing a single game. Mr. R secured 2nd place after winning against Dapuffster and FOW in winners bracket and Abadango and Nairo in losers bracket, pulling off a 3-2 comeback against the latter. Abadango, being the only Japanese player in top 8 despite expectations for Nietono and possibly Rain to also be present, finished the tournament in 4th place using his unorthodox mains Pac-Man and Wario. Ally got 5th place after eliminating MJG, StaticManny and ESAM, the latter two being very close sets, and himself being eliminated by Mr. R. Nietono was notably double-eliminated by Tearbear in the pools stage, failing to move on to the quarterfinals brackets in spite of being considered one of the top players from Japan.

Trivia

  • This is the 14th edition of the EVO tournament series and the 5th to feature a Smash game on the official lineup.
  • This is the first time two Smash games are featured at an EVO tournament.
  • Nintendo of America marketing manager and translator Bill Trinen registered to participate in the SSB4 tournament, under the tag "Th | trintroll",[5] with the "Th" crew tag apparently standing for Treehouse. However, due to the passing of Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo, Trinen changed his plans and did not attend, as EVO was held on the same weekend as Iwata's funeral.[6]
    • In response to Satoru Iwata's passing, a moment of silence was held before Smash 4's top 8.
  • MadCatz once again gave out gold FightSticks for EVO winners this year. The top 3 of each official EVO game, including both Smash games, received one.[7][8][9]
  • After receiving his 5th place medal, Mango took it off and threw it into the crowd.
  • Plup humorously forgot to receive his medal on stage with the rest of the top 8 players.
