A status condition is a temporary change in a character's strengths, abilities or actionability that can be applied in a variety of ways, but usually by attacks and items. They can be either positive or negative. Some status conditions are referred to in-game as transformations; what qualifies as a transformation appears to be somewhat arbitrary, though they usually involve changing a character's appearance in some way.

Transformations can have their duration extended via the use of transformation duration boosting Spirits, while most (but not all) negative status conditions can have their duration reduced, or can be prevented outright, by various Spirits.

List of status conditions[edit]

Condition Super Smash Bros. Super Smash Bros. Melee Super Smash Bros. Brawl Super Smash Bros. 4 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Effect Notes
Asleep Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Prevents any action from the afflicted player aside from strafing in the air until they wake up. Applied by attacks and items that have the sleep effect.
Bunny No Yes Yes Yes Yes Buffs the player's ground mobility stats and jump height, as well as making them fall faster. Applied by the Bunny Hood item, or by the Bunny Special Smash setting.
Buried No Yes Yes Yes Yes Prevents any action from the afflicted player until they escape. Applied by attacks and items that have the bury or plunge effect. Cannot affect airborne opponents.
Clear No Yes Yes Yes Yes Makes the player invisible, aside from occasional flashes revealing their location. Applied by the Clear Special Smash setting, by the Melee exclusive item Cloaking Device, and as a random effect of Hocus Pocus.
Curry No No Yes Yes Yes Causes the player to continuously breathe fire, and makes their walking and running animations faster. Prior to Ultimate, it also prevented walking. Applied by the Superspicy Curry item, or the Curry Special Smash setting. Can also be granted by Spirits.
Cursed No No No No Yes Inflicts damage to the afflicted player over time in increments and at a rate defined in the attack script for the move that applied the status. Wears off after a set amount of time. Exclusive to Joker's Eiha / Eigaon.
Dazed Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Causes the afflicted player to stumble or hold their head in confusion for a period of time. Prevents action until the player recovers. Cannot affect airborne opponents. Can be caused by a shield break, or by moves with the stun effect.
Final Smash standby No No Yes Yes Yes Enables the player to use their Final Smash by inputting a neutral special. Prior to Ultimate, only one fighter can be in standby at once. In Ultimate, multiple characters can be in standby if the Final Smash Meter is used, though only one Final Smash can be active at once.
Flower No Yes Yes Yes Yes Causes a flower to grow on the afflicted player's head, dealing damage to them over time until it falls off. Temporary flower status is caused by the flower attack effect. Permanent flower status can be applied via the Special Smash setting.
Freefall Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Prevents any action from an airborne fighter aside from strafing in the air until they land, grab a ledge, or flinch. Forces a (usually) laggy crash landing upon landing on the ground. Can be self-inflicted by using certain special moves, and is also caused by breaking Pac-Man's trampoline.
Frozen No Yes Yes Yes Yes Encases a character in ice, preventing any action until they thaw out. Also causes them to fall more slowly in the air. Caused by ice attacks that deal sufficient knockback.
Gold No No No Yes Yes Coats the player in shimmering gold, and causes their direct attacks and throws to deal significantly increased knockback. Usually accompanied by an attack buff. Applied by collecting 100 coins in Golden Plains or by summoning Xerneas (Ultimate only). Certain opponents in Spirit Battles can have a permanent gold status.
