R.O.B. was officially revealed as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4 on October 15th alongside Ganondorf. Prior to this, he was leaked on September 11 on a leaker's Twitch stream. He has a new Final Smash. His other attacks seem to have the same properties as in Brawl, but are performed differently (for example, R.O.B. now crouches when performing his forward smash, and raises his arms when using Robo Burner).

His proportions and visual appearance are different than in Brawl: his head is seemingly smaller, and his appearance is more glossy and less metallic, putting him more in line with the original plastic toy.

How To Unlock

  • Play 70 VS Matches.
  • Collect at least 200 different trophies.

R.O.B. must then be fought on PictoChat 2.

Changes from Brawl

R.O.B. has been buffed, as many of his moves have increased range, are faster and has more KO power. However, many of his moves deals less damage than before, giving some nerfs as well.

  •   Up throw deals more damage and has more KO power.
  •   R.O.B.'s forward smash, S3, has increased range and power.
  •   His up smash can now hit grounded characters more easily, and deals much more damage and is now exceptionally strong.
  •   Down smash deals more damage and KO power.
    •   Down smash is now a semi-spike, making it even better KO move but lowering combo-options of R.O.B.
  •   Arm Rotor has a stronger finisher at the last hit.
    •   Its hits also connects much easier and R.O.B. can move farther and faster with it, greatly increasing utility of this move.
  •   Back air deals more damage and is stronger.
  •   Dash attack deals more damage.
  •   R.O.B. has stronger out of shield options.
  •   Down throw does more damage and allows for better follow ups.
  •   Forward tilt does more damage.
    •   It has slightly less reach.
  •   Up air is now a KO move.
    •   It deals much less damage.
  •   Gyro has more priority.
    •   Gyros deals much less damage; fully charged Gyro deals only 11% opposed to 18%. Gyros also are slightly weaker in damage when thrown.
  •   Neutral air is much faster.
    •   It deals less damage and slightly less knockback.
  •   His forward air is faster, and swings from overhead.
    •   Forward air does less damage.
  •   Down air is faster in terms of both startup and ending lag.
    •   Deals less damage.
  •   R.O.B. appears to be larger, increasing range.
    •   This makes his hurtbox bigger.
  •   Forward throw does less damage.
  •   Back throw does less damage.
  •   R.O.B.'s Final Smash is now a large, directional laser, with high KO'ing power.
  •   R.O.B. raises his arms while using Robo Burner.
  •   R.O.B. now has an animation for failing to pull out a Gyro, if a Gyro is already present on the stage.
  •   Robo Beam's fully charged laser is now much taller at the front, but appears to travel a shorter distance.
  •   R.O.B now makes more emotion during battle such as angry eyes and having one eye closed when hurt.

Trivia

Robotic Operating Buddy, appears as the default costume in the American version.
  • Depending on what version of the game the player has, R.O.B.'s default color palette changes. In English regions, he uses his North American grey color scheme, while in Japan, it uses his Famicom color scheme. This affects the colour of R.O.B.'s trophies, but not his appearance in the Sound Test. R.O.B. is the only character in all of the series with this distinction.
    • The official website shows his Japanese appearance in official artwork, although half of the screenshots show his North American appearance.
  • R.O.B. now has a helpless state, though he can only enter it when landing on the trampoline summoned by Pac-Man's up special move, Pac-Jump, and only when the trampoline turns red.
