Playstyle

Dark Wizzy is mostly known for his extremely potent punish game and his "touch of death"; he has a mastery over Mario's combos, where he'll regularly lead each hit into a highly damaging combo that goes beyond the typical Mario fare, making getting grabbed by him an extremely threatening prospect. Since Mario typically finds ease to combo into KO moves, Dark Wizzy has a knack of finding various ways of leading his hits into a forward aerial or one of Mario's smash attacks for an early KO.

February-June 2019: Ultimate's Best Mario

Already finishing off Smash 4's PGR as 95th, Dark Wizzy was looking to reach new heights with himself and Mario, especially in a new game. He started the first PGRU season on a fairly good note, with a 17th at GENESIS 6, where he beat Nietono and ZD before falling to Light 3-0 and Kurama (known as Prodigy then) 3-2 in the Mario ditto. However, Dark Wizzy fell short at Frostbite 2019, where he got upset by Ozone and lost to WaDi for 65th. Although Dark Wizzy got 2nd at Return to Subspace 2, losing only to Marss 3-2 twice, Dark Wizzy also suffered from a mediocre Collision 2019, where he lost to Wishes and Jack for 33rd.

Fortunately for Dark Wizzy, he picked himself back up at his next three tournaments. He surprised many with his 4th at Suplex City Smash, where he beat Light, Suarez, and Jakal. He had another great performance at Pound 2019, where he beat Mr. R 2-1 and reverse 3-0'd Light en route to 13th, which marked the first time Light missed top 8 at a major in Ultimate. Dark Wizzy got another 13th at MomoCon 2019, getting a win on Goblin. Although Dark Wizzy suffered from two lackluster performanced at Smash 'N' Splash 5 and CEO 2019, he was still able to be ranked 31st on the Spring 2019 PGRU as Ultimate's best Mario.

July-December 2019: Road to Top 20

Even though Dark Wizzy had a strong and respectable season during the spring of 2019, he had an even better season during the second season. He started off strong with a 2nd at Paradigm Shift 2019, beating Myran and yeti for 2nd place. Dark Wizzy had an even more impressive performance at Thunder Smash 2, beating VoiD, ESAM, MVD, and notably double eliminating Dabuz en route to 2nd place losing to MVD after a reset. With only 2 tournaments in the span of 2 weeks, Dark Wizzy managed to get 7 wins on players from the first PGRU season.

Unfortunately, Dark Wizzy underperformed at EVO 2019, placing 65th losing to Mao and MastaMario. Dark Wizzy then got a respectable 17th at Super Smash Con 2019. Despite the setback at EVO, he started to top 8 multiple majors, including Shine 2019, Glitch 7 - Minus World, Thunder Smash 3: Clash of the Pandas, and DreamHack Atlanta 2019, beating players such as Cosmos, LeoN, and Goblin. In addition, he has amassed good results at regionals aside from Port Priority 5, notably winning Mexican Gaming Championship. After a somewhat lackluster 5th place at Play With Heart, Dark Wizzy was ranked 22nd on the second PGRU season, although he was hoping for more.

2020: Making a Case for Top 10 Worldwide, COVID pandemic

A month after Play with Heart, Dark Wizzy had a powerful start for the third PGRU season in the new year of 2020, placing 7th at a supermajor in Let's Make Big Moves where he beat Cosmos and Sinji. Two weeks later, Dark Wizzy entered Glitch 8 - Missingno after being disappointed in missing top 20 on the previous PGRU season. However, Dark Wizzy being upset over it did not stop him from a phenomenal performance. After beating no PGRU players on his way to top 8 winners, Dark Wizzy made a lot of noise in top 8, beating Dabuz in a surprisingly close 3-0. After losing to Tweek in an extremely close game 5 set, he beat ESAM convincingly 3-1, beat Tweek 3-0 in grand finals, and then lost to him 3-1 for 2nd place. With an incredible performance at Glitch 8, all eyes were on Dark Wizzy's performance at GENESIS 7, hoping for another top 8.

Of course, the top 8 did happen. After making top 64 winners side at GENESIS 7 dropping only one game, Dark Wizzy beat MuteAce 3-1. After losing to Maister 3-1, Dark Wizzy went on a strong losers run, beating Meme, Sinji, and Dabuz to make top 8. Dark Wizzy wasn't done there, as he beat Light 3-2 in an intense set after almost getting reverse 3-0d. Guaranteed 5th, Dark Wizzy fought ESAM, which resulted in ESAM winning the runback 3-2 after reverse 3 stocking Dark Wizzy game 4 when Dark Wizzy was up 2-1. With 3 strong major performances, Dark Wizzy was looking like a top 10-15 player worldwide, which was a big step up from the previous PGRU season.

Dark Wizzy's next major was Frostbite 2020. Although he placed 17th, which ended his streak of top 8s at majors, he had an unlucky bracket. After losing to Maister 3-1 again, he immediately had to fight MkLeo in losers, due to the fact that fellow Mario player Kurama (Prodigy then) notably upset MkLeo. Despite not making top 8, Dark Wizzy ended up losing to the two players that ended up being finalists of the same major, which marks another good major for Dark Wizzy. Right before quarantine started, Dark Wizzy won an Australian major in the form of Phantom 2020, in addition to qualifying for Smash Ultimate Summit 3. Unfortunately, tournaments were put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic right after Dark Wizzy amassed the results of a top 10 or 15 player. While Dark Wizzy did not compete in online tournaments during the pandemic, he grew a community on Twitch and focused more on content creation.

2021: Return to Offline and Readjusting to Tournaments

After a whole year and a half of not competing, Dark Wizzy marked his return to Smash Ultimate Summit 3 in August 2021. With a lot of work put in prior to the pandemic, many had high hopes for how Dark Wizzy would do in his first tournament back. Unfortunately, Dark Wizzy hit a very hard low at the tournament. He was the only one of the 16 competitors to not win a single set of the five he played, and only took 2 games out of the 17 he played, only taking 1 game against both Atomsk and Riddles. With all this, Dark Wizzy got 13th at Summit, as people came to the conclusion that he was no longer a top 10 player and Kurama overtook him as Ultimate's best Mario, who recently got 3rd at Mega Smash Mondays 240.

Luckily, things started looking better, albeit not to a return to form. Three weeks after Summit, Dark Wizzy entered CT Gamercon 4, where he beat naitosharp to make second place, only to get double eliminated by Light. A week after, he had a decent 25th at Glitch 8.5 - Konami Code, losing to Chag and Charliedaking who both made exceptional runs. Things looked better at Low Tide City 2021, where he placed 13th. Although he didn't gather any notable wins there, his game 5 set versus Marss, who went on to place 3rd, opened everyone's eyes on how much Dark Wizzy has improved since tournaments returned.

At the end of October, Dark Wizzy made a lot of noise at Port Priority 6. While making top 32 winners side dropping no games, he went on to beat Tweek 3-1, who was considered Ultimate's second-best player at the time. This was seen as the upset of the tournament, alongside Chronos' win over Kola. After getting 3-0'd very convincingly by LeoN, Dark Wizzy nonetheless made top 8 through losers after beating Ned in a nailbiter game 5 set. Although he lost to Lui$ after that, Dark Wizzy got a very impressive result at Port Priority 6, placing 7th, his best result at a major post-quarantine. Not only did he top 8 a major at his third major since the return of offline, but he also even grabbed a top 3 win in the form of Tweek. With all this, people had higher hopes for how Dark Wizzy would do at his next majors, and he solidified himself as Ultimate's best Mario. However, this was his last tournament until his return in March 2022, when the PGR would resume.

2022: A Drop In Production

After 5 months of not competing or practicing, Dark Wizzy made his return to two regionals in late March and early April 2022: SOS 7 and Clip It II, respectively, where he slightly underperformed although still placed 7th. Eventually, Dark Wizzy had his first major in 6 months at GENESIS 8, where he placed a mediocre 49th. The next weekend, Dark Wizzy had another mediocre performance at Pound 2022, placing 33rd. With two poor performances at majors and not gathering any top player wins at the four tournaments he attended, people thought Dark Wizzy was back to where he was at Smash Ultimate Summit 3.

However, Dark Wizzy had a much better performance at Low Tide City 2022. After getting upset by Shoe 2-1, Dark Wizzy was guaranteed 65th. However, he won 6 sets in losers, including vs BassMage and BigBoss. His run was stopped by Zomba for 9th, who eventually placed 4th. At MomoCon 2022, Dark Wizzy notably beat Pink Fresh to make it out of pools in winners side. However, he lost to Scend and DDee for 17th; moreover, the latter went on a notable run to 5th place. Dark Wizzy had one last major for the third PGRU season at Battle of BC 4, placing 25th after having to forfeit to SuperGirlKels due to facing chest pains and body tremors. With such a small sample size of tournaments and inconsistent placings all around, Dark Wizzy was ranked 47th on the PGRU v3 North America, a controversial placement due to the ranking's time span and methodology.

When the new PGRU season started, Dark Wizzy gathered solid results at 3 regionals: COST 2022, Warp Zone, and Central Stadium, where he placed 7th, 5th, and 7th, respectively. At Dark Wizzy's first major of the season, Smash Factor 9, he achieved a similar run to that of Low Tide City 2022; while he placed worse (getting 13th), he obtained better wins. After getting upset by Cali, Dark Wizzy took decent wins on Regi Shikimi and Law, then upset Chag to get his best win since Tweek at Port Priority 6.

At first, it seemed like any expectations of an upward trend, however, failed to materialize, as Dark Wizzy underperformed again at Rise 'N Grind and Shine 2022, placing 33rd and 25th respectively. However, Dark Wizzy would place a respectable 17th at Riptide 2022, with a win on Chase, but would fall to Zomba in a very convincing 3-0 and skittles 3-1. After that, Dark Wizzy would place a very promising 9th place finish at Lost Tech City, upsetting both MuteAce and SHADIC and losing to Zomba and Lui$ both in competitive sets.
