An Event Match is a battle in which predetermined conditions (i.e. number of opponents, your strength, handicaps, and so on) are imposed. Event matches first appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee, with 51 being available. In Brawl, there are 41 single-player events and 20 co-op events (a new feature), each with three difficulty levels.
In Melee, most events allow you to choose any character, with relatively few pre-set character events. In Brawl, this facet is reversed; with all battles except the few All-Star Matches and final events allowing any character to be selected.
