User Pit
Universe Kid Icarus

Wings of Icarus is Pit's up special move. When performed, Pits wings glow a blue color and he has the ability to fly for approximately 3 seconds. The initial "flash" will stop a projectile for a split second, but interrupt the move. It also pushes enemies and items away. When this move is done in midair, Pit may slightly lose altitude.

This move is arguably one of the best recovery moves in the game, as Pit is capable of flying up past the upper blast line (without being KOed, as he is not in a stunned animation), and flying around the bottom of most stages with this move alone. He can even pull off the Reverse Hyrule Jump using only the Wings of Icarus. The move can take Pit even higher if performed from the ground.

The only downside to this move is that while using this move, if Pit is hit, he cannot use it again until he lands. However if the move is interrupted just as Pit activates it (during the initial flash), it won't count as a attempt to use the move and he may re-use it without touching ground. The window of opportunity for this is very small though.

If Pit's feet touch the ground while using Wings of Icarus, he can re-use all of his mid-air jumps and even Wings of Icarus again provided he cancels it or is hit by an opponent first. This can be repeated as to technically give Pit an infinite amount of jumps, but this move is subject to diminishing returns if used less than two seconds after finishing it the first time (including landing, being interrupted, attacking, grabbing a ledge, or letting it run its course in the air) and initiating the second one. The minimum time it will last is about one second, but the exact duration depends on how quickly the move was reused; the sooner it is reused the less time it will last.

Origin

The move is based on the Angel Feather item from Kid Icarus, which allowed him to fly back up should he fall off the bottom of the screen, and the Wings of Pegasus, one of the three Sacred Treasures, which allowed Pit to fly freely.

Description from the Instruction Booklet

Fly around the stage with your wings. The effect will only last a short while.

Trivia

  • It is possible to not go into helplessness by canceling the move using an aerial attack when flying.
  • When Pit is in metal form, Wings of Icarus will only slow his fall, unless used directly from the ground. This also applies to his jumps.
  • This move is functionally similar to R.O.B.'s Robo Burner.
  • Wing dashing is a technique with this move that allows Pit to move around the screen quickly.
