TOKYO SMASH BOOT CAMP was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate invitational tournament held by Gackt, as an exchange match between foreign and Japanese teams. It was held on May 3rd, 2023 in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan during Golden Week. The tournament was a double-elimination bracket, with a Japanese vs. overseas set in each Winners' Round 1 set. Sets were Best of 3, until Best of 5 started at Top 3. A crew battle was held before the bracket, with a live draft.

There was miscommunication with the organizers and UltRank on whether the tournament would be ranked, with some players taking the tournament as practice and Best of 5 not starting until Top 3. Notably, acola lost when playing Pyra/Mythra against Zomba and Kazuya against Tea to place an underwhelming 9th, and Miya lost Winners' Round 1 to Dabuz from playing Hero in the match point game. acola tweeted he was told the tournament was an exhibition event, furthering speculation about the intent of the tournament.[1] The tournament was originally added as an A+ tier major tournament on the UltRank 2023 Tournament Tiering Sheet. After the tournament, watch contacted UltRank to clear up miscommunication, and the tournament was removed from the UltRank 2023 Tournament Tiering Sheet, becoming unranked.[2]

TriviaEdit

  • Grand Finals had the same players as 2023 Japan NA Smashfest at Shuton's house the day before, however Miya won instead of losing this time.
  • After Miya won the tournament, Hungrybox played a "Thug Finals" game against him, which Miya won by one stock.
